Project Title: A Spark of a New Hero's Journey: Creating the Next Superhero Comic
BASIS Advisor: Maya Cave
Internship Location: Independent Project
Onsite Mentor: Meg Giles

Project Abstract

My project dives into creating a new and original superhero and his origin story as a comic book. Filled with conflicts and the supernatural, this story features a child’s determination to carry superpowers and become an extra-ordinary person. Popular comic books such as DC and Marvel Comics as well as issues of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles use incredible techniques such as foreshortening, line weight, and shading to portray cinematic shots in each panel. I am researching and practicing with online art tutorials as well as reading Story Genius by Lisa Cron to develop a narrative structure that will keep the audience stuck to the plot of this new superhero’s story. At the end of the project, I will develop a script, storyboard, and rendered inking of the first 5 chapters of my superhero comic book.

  • The Final Chapter, Week 3: “We’re in the Endgame Now…”

I’m sure a lot of you have seen Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War and remember Doctor Strange’s iconic line: “We’re in the endgame now.” Since this really fits the final week of the senior project, here’s my progress towards Chapter 3 thus far. I’m pushing through with the inking for this final chapter. This part... Read More

  • The Final Chapter, Week 2: You Can Judge This Book By Its Cover

Hey, everyone! I’ve been pushing through more pages, and this is my current state of mind right now:  Well, it may not exactly be like that, but the work has been very productive (with almost 8 more pages complete).  But enough about that! As I promised, the cover’s getting its own update today. Here’s what... Read More

  • Chapter 2: “Spark”

Alright everyone, I have a lot to talk about this week. The blog title is (surprise, surprise) the name of this chapter, but another reason why I chose this name was because it made me realize how to change my mental process on how to continue with drawing the comic panels. Normally, I would lose... Read More

  • Setting the Stage for the Conflict

So, we’re now at the halfway mark in this 10-week project. This week I’ve progressed through more of the storyboard for the second chapter. And as a source of reference (as well as entertainment), I’ve been reading more Japanese manga, especially action-packed stories like Sakamoto Days and One Piece. My storyboard for Chapter 2 is... • New Faces, New Styles

Welcome back, everyone, from Spring Break! I was able to create some new character profiles for the upcoming chapter, as my blog post title suggests. As for the "New Faces" part, I'll let this picture explain it: Apart from studying the Loomis method used to structure faces, I introduced 3 more characters to the story:... Read More

  • Chapter 1: “So, You Want Powers?”

Hello everyone! This is now Week 3 of my journey! I hope you got to know the first few characters in my story and even related to some of them. This past week I’ve been working on putting the panels into ink to get a final illustration of each page. Some of the materials I’ve... Read More

  • Lights, Camera, Action! : Picking the Best Panel Shots

Hello, and welcome back to my blog! With the first week of my project over, I finalized my characters Marcus, Jules, and Amber from being concepts to concrete designs and profiles for the story. • The Pilot Chapter: Designing the Characters and the World

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s … probably not necessary to use this clichéd phrase right now. Welcome to the introduction of a new superhero! My name is Rohit Panga and my project title “A Spark of a New Hero’s Journey: Creating the Next Superhero Comic” shines light on the comic book genre that... Read More
