Chapter 2: “Spark”

Rohit p -

Alright everyone, I have a lot to talk about this week. The blog title is (surprise, surprise) the name of this chapter, but another reason why I chose this name was because it made me realize how to change my mental process on how to continue with drawing the comic panels. Normally, I would lose motivation to draw something because I kept messing up and almost tearing the page trying to erase it (especially while drawing hands). But this week, I just decided to take my chances and speed through as many pages as possible, which helped me ignore any mistakes and fix them later. This week, I produced 8-10 more pages than last week.

This chapter focuses on the inciting incident of the story, especially with the antagonist’s introduction. One question came to mind: What kind of monster should I produce? As soon as I thought “monster,” I just scribbled whatever came to mind, such as massive claws, deadly eyes, shadows, and other villainous characteristics. Then I was left with a dark and gloomy figure, something from a nightmare.

I focused a lot on visual and sound effects in this chapter. I watched a lot of YouTube art tutorials, such as “DrawLikeASir” and “Jmarron,” to draw lightning, fire, dust, and other visual effects related to superpowers. As a result, they turned out a lot more different than the squiggly lines I had drawn as a kid.

Like the last chapter, I faced problems in the inking phase due to pacing. I gave myself two weeks this time to go for the storyboard so I could catch up on the inking, but with a higher page count, it was harder to keep up with the final inks. In addition, the 0.7-mm Sharpie pen I have is very useful, but not so much for filling in large gaps of area, such as hair or clothes.

For the next chapter, though, I plan to give more time for the inking phase so I will have more to release in the next coming weeks. But for now, Chapter 2 Part 1 and Chapter 2 Part 2 are out here and now!

    Hi, Rohit! Could you provide links (up above) for those Youtube videos you refer to? I'd love to see those. And, I adore the challenge of producing much more than you had before, along with the observations about what that meant for your process. Great work! MG

    @meggiles Of course!

    Hey, Rohit! I love how you pushed through and just kept drawing. I feel like that shows how much your process is evolving. The way you described creating the antagonist makes it sound like the design came to life on its own, which is super cool. Excited to see how Chapter 3 turns out!

    Rohit, I am loving this project. I really appreciate that I have another artist to look to in the senior projects; you're an inspiration for me. I was wondering how long you were planning on making this story. Will it be like Dragon Ball or One Piece where it seemingly never ends, or will it be shorter like Gurren Lagann?

    Hi @dina_i. Thank you for your feedback! I never actually designed him explicitly, but I had features in mind that I thought would be a must to include.

    @jacob_p, That's a very good question and my answer is ... I don't know. One Piece's author, for example, said a couple years ago that the manga would end pretty soon, but it's still going on to this day, so I don't exactly have a good place to end it. However, I do have some of the arcs planned out that will be equivalent to one volume.
