Chapter 1: “So, You Want Powers?”

Rohit p -

Hello everyone! This is now Week 3 of my journey! I hope you got to know the first few characters in my story and even related to some of them. This past week I’ve been working on putting the panels into ink to get a final illustration of each page. Some of the materials I’ve been using for this process are just a regular 0.7-mm mechanical pencil and a 0.7-mm Sharpie Gel pen. As for the blog title, it is literally the name of this chapter, influenced by some of the characters’ lines in this chapter.

Unfortunately, I did run into some problems when inking this chapter. Inking took a lot of precision and focus to cover each pen stroke without messing up; much like a 10 year old who was upset with the way their hands looked and ended up crumpling their sketch. Apart from this, time was another enemy this week because creating 14 pages of artwork is already consuming in the storyboard phase, so inking each panel with a ruler only added to the time. It only made me wonder how much practice other comic and manga artists have to release new chapters every week. Even though I wasn’t able to finish the inking for this chapter (only with 4-5 pages left in pencil), I’m still excited to release it now because I can show how different the inked pictures are from the storyboard thumbnails. By the end of the project, I’ll have all the pages in ink to present it properly.

I’m ready to work on the next chapter, where I’ll introduce the villain to the story, so there will be more new characters to get to know. Now, go read the prologue and first chapter of Atlas here!

Rohit, I'm at a loss for words. I just read through the prologue and chapter 1 and your artwork is incredible. That cliffhanger at the end is going to kill me... I want to know what happens!! Anyways, aside from your amazing artwork, I want to say that even your storytelling skills are really impressive! Sometimes artwork in comics can be phenomenal, but the story ends up falling flat; however, I am really enjoying the story so far (even if there's only one chapter and the prologue). Great work! Random question, but do you plan to do any full-color panels in the future like you did in the Prologue?

@ashwyn_k I'm glad you like it so far! Although sadly, the prologue will be the only one I am doing in full-color (I drew it digitally, which took me 87 hours to complete total). However, I will end up making a cover for the comic book at the end of the project, which will be in full-color and will also be digitally produced.

The effort you're putting into this project is insane, Rohit. I can't wait to see the colored cover art (hopefully it won't take as long as the prologue). What software are you using to do your digital art? I would love to know as I am doing digital art for my project as well.

Rohit, I’m truly in awe of the amount of detail that went into those pages. I love how much thought you put into every little aspect of the artwork. It’s amazing to see the progress you’ve made, especially with the challenges you faced during inking! The precision and patience required for each panel must be intense, but I can already tell the final product will be totally worth it. On top of the artwork, the story is so intriguing, I want to read more!

@jacob_p Yeah I hope the cover art won't take as long too (especially since I won't have to draw the same character many times again haha). I used Ibis Paint X for the prologue, and it is pretty good because it has all of those different sets of brush types, colors, and art tools for free. There are others, though, like Procreate.

@dina_i Thank you for your interest in the story!
