Week 1 of Senior Project – Shaheer Rehman
Hello again everyone!
Week 1 of my project was a week in which a lot of things changed. First off, I decided to change the final product of my project slightly. I will still be doing the same thing as before which is shadowing a doctor throughout his day of diagnosing and talking about diseases, and then explaining how they diagnose and treat these diseases. However now, I have decided to pick a specific disease and work with it.
The disease I chose was Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA). The reason why I chose this disease is because it is not only very common in the site I am working at, but it is also a pulmonary disease that is very well researched. My new plan is to work with this disease and through both my experiences at the office and my own research at home, I want to understand how OSA and its various treatments work. I will be using both my own experiences with the patients, as well as my research online. By the end, I hope to find a potential gap that I see in the treatment and try to come up with a theoretical solution(s) for this gap. Currently, I haven’t chosen one, but a good example could be the problems in the masks for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure(CPAP), which is one of the most popular OSA treatments.
Apart from that, in my first week, I got to see and observe many cool patients and cases and learned a lot about pulmonology, sleep medicine, and diagnosing diseases as a whole. One of the coolest pieces of equipment I saw was a speech-to-text microphone that the doctor was using. An image is attached below, and essentially doctors are able to use these to speak into them and then it automatically types out what they are saying. I have never seen something like this before and it was really cool to see. Other than that, I am excited for the future of my project and everything that is to come with it.
Thank you for reading!
Shaheer
