Week 1 – Braydon k

Good Morning,

My first week of the project has involved some background research and reading surrounding the best structures and reasons for the resources used to make dentures. I have narrowed down what exactly my study will focus on.

This study will focus on a specific type of crown called metal crowns. These are the ‘status quo’ of crowns and are the most widely spread type of crowns used in dental practices throughout the United States. Traditionally, this involves the use of metals including gold, nickel, silver, platinum, and many more. For metal crowns, the first step for patients would be to take an impression that often requires using traditional impression materials where patients bite on mixtures of alginate, polysulfides, or silicone. When patients bite into these materials it creates an indent allowing practitioners to then create a model or mold for the patient’s mouth that can allow technicians to closely study all details of the mouth accurately and make the required adjustments for the crown. The next step in the process would be to create a wax pattern of the crown which is the blueprint or first draft of the final product. This wax pattern often acts as the mold that technicians can use to pour the desired materials into and let dry to create the final form of the crown. For example, this study will involve the use of liquid metals being poured into the wax pattern and letting it dry. Finally, depending on the patient’s wants, technicians will polish or layer the crown with resin or ceramic to make the crown look more aesthetically pleasing. 

In this first week, I am still focusing on learning everything I possibly can about dentures and have been given a run-through by my mentor surrounding this whole process I have just described. I will also be beginning some mock data analysis ensuring that when it comes to real patient data it will be a seamless process. Furthermore, I will have to begin studying AI models with my mentor to determine if these models are the correct fit for each patient.

    Hi Braydon! Everything looks super interesting so far! What specific AI models will you be studying with your mentor to determine the correct fit for each patient?

      Hi Ethan! My project will focus on one AI model involving a program called Glidewell.io. This program will be employed because it is used at the practice of my site and is also a common program employed at many different practices.

    Hi Braydon! Your background research looks very thorough! Have you had any direct experience with the different types of crowns directly? For example, have you been able to feel the different textures yourself or talk to patients who have tried different textures for a first person perspective?

      Hi Sophia! Yes, I have been exposed to just the materials that will be used for both AI and traditional crowns. For metal crowns, its more sturdy because of the metal. However, for the AI method the material is softer employing the use of a more resin/plastic material.

    Hey Braydon! This sounds so interesting! Could you describe how the data collecting/analyzing process would go (even in the mock scenarios). And how will the AI improve the models? -- the regular process of making crowns that you mentioned sounds pretty efficient already.
