Senior Research Week 9 – Shaheer Rehman

Shaheer R -

Hey everyone!

Welcome to Week 9 of my blog! This week has been all about finalizing my presentation and working through the last few details with the help of my doctor. We’ve been reviewing the key parts of my project. My doctor provided great advice on framing the medical importance of comfort and customization in treatment adherence, which I’ve now incorporated into my final slides.

While preparing, I also came across something unexpected and fascinating: the possible connection between CPAP treatment and sleep paralysis. In some patients, particularly those newly starting therapy or adjusting to higher pressure settings, disrupted REM cycles can lead to brief episodes of sleep paralysis. It’s not super common, but learning about it reminded me how complex and individualized sleep disorders—and their treatments—can be. It also reinforced why patient education is just as important as product design.

I’ve been fine-tuning my presentation visuals to clearly explain both the technical and human aspects of the project—how improving a mask’s fit can directly improve quality of life, and how understanding side effects can make treatments more effective and less intimidating.

Next week will be the final stretch, and I’m excited to share everything I’ve worked on. Thanks again for following along each week—I can’t wait to wrap this journey up with you all!

Hey Shaheer! This is very interesting. What are the consequences of sleep paralysis?

Sleep paralysis can cause intense fear, anxiety, and disrupted sleep patterns. While it’s not physically harmful, it can really impact sleep quality and mental health.

Hey Shaheer, are there other common side effects from using the CPAP masks other than sleep paralysis?
      shaheer_r
For CPAP masks, common side effects (other than sleep paralysis, which is rare) include dry mouth, nasal congestion, skin irritation, and discomfort from the mask fit.
