Reliving History

Skylar C -

This week has been an exciting one for me! On Thursday, I was able to sit down with my advisor, Sarah Willadsen, who is the Adult Services Director, and ask her some questions. She was able to tell me more about what they have planned for the library’s 50th celebration. There is going to be the official event on May 30th called Fest in the West and a display in the second floor Viewerie about the library’s history that will include photos that I have scanned from the binders. The staff is also encouraging patrons to share their library story or experiences, which will then be also included in the display. In the library right now, there are tables where you can write down what you like about the library and hang it on a “tree”. I included a picture that I took of the one on the first floor below!

Another program the library is putting on to celebrate is the Library Passport Adventure. You can collect your own passport, which has lists that you can accomplish about the library that you can get stamped off by a library staff member. With each task you stamp, that adds another ticket for you into a prize drawing! I was given a passport this week, and while I haven’t done any of the tasks yet, I plan on doing as many as I can, starting next week! Some of the tasks are pretty easy, like showing a staff member your library card or checking out a book or movie. I included below a picture of my passport and a link to the Prescott Public Library page on their website about their celebration. I highly encourage everyone to check it out and submit your own library stories or start your own passport!

Besides talking about the celebration, my advisor answered some questions I had about specifically the Prescott library’s efforts to preserve history and took me on a small tour of the library. She showed me Lucy, the machine that sorts all of the books into bins when they arrive again at the library, and more of the behind of the scenes of repairing DVDS or getting new books ready. She also showed me the collection of old Prescott library cards, which I included some pictures of below. It’s amazing what they used before the computers today, like the one from the 80s. The card has holes cut in it which would then be scanned like a Scantron and be used to identify who the card belongs to. For the rest of the week, I scanned a lot from the binders and finally got to the 2000s, and at home I worked on my presentation and pamphlet. I can’t wait to hear more about the celebration and see the display, which will be going up in May!

That is so cool about the library's 50th anniversary celebration! What was the most surprising thing you learned about the behind-the-scenes work at the library and how they did things?

The one that I found the most interesting, and saw the most of, is them prepping DVDs to be put on the shelves. They had a DVD cleaner if the discs were too dirty, and if the case was damaged or needed to be replaced with something easier, they would print out a cover and put it in a new case, depending on the disc. I only briefly saw a bit of this process, as when I was scanning documents, multiple times someone would print out a movie cover then come and grab it to be put in the case.
