Week 2 Update!
Amita B -
Hi, its Amita! This week, I continued volunteering at my site placement. One of my main tasks was setting up a booth at Peoria Flex Academy, where we provided students with information about grief resources available in their community. We also organized an interactive activity where people could write down the names of their loved ones on sticky notes if they felt comfortable sharing. This was meant to show that everyone experiences grief and that they are not alone.
Additionally, I have been added as a volunteer for our teen online grief group. This group supports youth who either do not live near Glendale or do not have transportation to attend in-person sessions at Billy’s Place but still need support. This is my first time working with an online grief group, and I’m excited to see how the activities differ from those in our in-person meetings!
Additionally, I realized I haven’t fully introduced my site placement, Billy’s Place, and I think the story behind it is truly beautiful and inspiring.
The founder, Juli McGrea, and her son Billy began coping with the sudden death of her husband, Mike, when Billy was only 15 months old. Their lives were changed forever, and through their grief, they created Billy’s Place to use what they had learned on their journey to help others know there is hope.
I have learned a lot more about Billy’s Place through these experiences, and I’m looking forward to what’s next. I’ll update you again soon!
