Yippee! Yippee! Yippee! Week 9

Josh n -

Hello everyone, I know it’s been a while but I’m back! And I come with great news! I figured out how to uncorrupt my videos!

I finally downloaded a pack from a link that Morgan had sent me and it worked like a charm. I downloaded the K-Lite Codec pack, which went through all my files and I believe changed the format of the video clips to something that I could open without issue. I looked through all the clips that I hadn’t before, which ended up being 27. I was correct about the snakes not being to start recordings on the cameras, they are too small, slow moving, and as I learned, cold. The I in PIR sensor, which my cameras are using, stands for infrared. That means that it doesn’t just use motion sensing, but it also uses heat to know when to capture footage. This extra means that the snakes can’t start recordings; however, that doesn’t mean that I have no snake footage. Six of the twenty seven new clips that were started by either wind or people had snakes in the frame for at least part of the video. I have data! In the end it’s not enough to make any sort of conclusions based on my research question parameters, but they are still results. As I watched through I was recording everything; the date, location, camera, initial location of the head, the time of day of any behaviors, the duration of these behaviors in seconds, the average behavior duration per video, the temperature at the start of each action in degrees Fahrenheit, the average temperature per video, the individual, the behavior code, the behavior full name, any others within association range, and who those individuals were. One major issue I found however was that I couldn’t see the paint on any of the individuals, so I couldn’t identify them. This is why I recorded the location of the head in the first frame of appearance, so someone could easily follow it. I used this figure below to separate the sectors of the frame.

Thank you all for reading and I’ll be back next week probably with some paper updates!
