Project Title: Warm Relations between Cold-blooded Creatures; A Study on Narrow-Headed Garter Snakes Behavior around Family during Hibernation
BASIS Advisor: Sheri Jordan and Jacyln Titone
Internship Location: NAU Biology Department
Onsite Mentor: Erika Nowak

Project Abstract

Narrow-Headed garter snakes are a semi-aquatic, nonvenomous, and endangered species of snake native to the southwest United States. Northern Arizona University rescued some individuals of this species several years ago, and have housed them in outdoor and indoor vivariums on campus. My project aims to further understand the complex relations formed between individuals in this study in hopes to add to their conservation efforts in the future. Narrow-Headed garter snakes hibernate during the winter season. In the largest of the vivariums, a 25 by 25 by 15 foot enclosure featuring four subterranean hibernation boxes, a pond, and natural terrain, we set up two trail cameras. They are placed in different corners of the vivarium and are set to record when motion is detected. The snakes have been color coded so that each individual may be identified in the footage. My goal is to identify possible patterns in the snake behavior when they are in proximity with others, family or not. I will look at the footage and categorize what I observe by date, individual, time of the action, duration of the action, the action, and any other individuals that were present. I will analyze this data to see if individuals have personal preferences, and how that impacts their behaviors. This can hopefully allow researchers to create safer environments for this endangered species by helping them understand why these snakes behave as they do.

  • Say Goodbye to Silly Snakes :( Conclusion

Hey everyone, it's the last post!   Being able to work with Dr. N and Morgan throughout my senior year has been a wonderful experience, and I would one hundred percent do it again. They, along with Ms. T, taught me so much about the research process; how to find good sources relevant to my... Read More

  • Research Papers and Track Meets are Not Friends :( Week 10

Hello everyone! For week 10 I was very busy with sports and trying to get my final paper submitted to the AP (the final work on it being done in Snowflake during a track meet as the title suggests), but I want to use this post to reflect a bit and explain how I would... Read More

  • Welp. Week 7

Hey everyone, again I apologize for the lateness of my post, (who would've thought that these last couple months would be so busy!) This last week was supposed to have the perfect conditions across all aspects of the vivarium to allow me to continue with my project this week, meaning I would have real data... Read More

Welcome back everybody! Todays post contains some good and some bad to cover, which will hopefully be all good by next week. First off, I got no footage last week, and still have no data overall. Hello everyone! I am currently in Mexico but I've still made some progress on my project! In this post I'll describe what I've been doing to prepare for my real data and define the actions I'll be looking at. So, I still don't have any footage from my target vivarium, which is unfortunate but will... Read More

  • Silly Little Snakes are Trying to Kill Themselves, and it’s Working :( Week 2

Hi everyone! This last week has been pretty uneventful; I met with my advisors again and got some more of Morgan's ACT footage to practice recording data with, but we figured out the camera situation! NAU got back to us on what all we had asked for, and the overall consensus was that all options... Read More

For the past several weeks my external advisors, Dr. Nowak and Morgan T, and I have faced one major wall in the progression of my project; cameras. Hi everyone! My name is Josh N, I'm a senior at BASIS Flagstaff and for my senior project I will be recording Narrow-Headed Gartersnakes at NAU during their hibernation period to see how they interact with each other.
