Middle Schoolers, Who Knew? (Week 8)

Another week of teaching!
I didn’t get to go back into the classroom again last week, but I’ve been twice this week so far, and am planning to come in again on Thursday. Yesterday was kimchi day, though! It was so good. Like I said last post, Mrs. K makes her own kimchi, so it tasted wonderful; her husband made three or four (I can’t remember, there was a lot going on) big batches of kimchi fried rice as well. One of the batches was double spicy, so a few of the kids who tried it had to run to get some water (it was kinda funny). I was actually really surprised about how willing the students were to try the foreign foods– a majority of each class asked to try the actual kimchi straight up. A lot of them said they liked it, and Mrs. K was even asked for the recipe a few times! Some didn’t like it, but they were surprisingly respectful about it. I guess I should give middle schoolers more credit?
For the actual teaching aspect– we started going over real sijo poems. Along with eating the food, we did an activity. The students were given one line of sijo each and had to find the others who had the other lines. Then they had to break the lines into phrases. For reference, the sijo has three lines, each line has four phrases, and each phrase has at least three syllables. The kids were kind of confused with syllable counts at first (a few were flabbergasted that the word “through” is only one syllable), but after some time they got the hang of it. They were also confused with the breaking of the three lines.
Another cool thing: I finished my research paper! I’m going through and doing revisions upon revisions, but still– it’s done! Kim-unnie was super proud and now we’re going to work on my presentation and all that. Wish me luck!
