Project Title: Survival Is A Must: Women’s poetry throughout history BASIS Advisor: Gered Ryan Internship Location: Northland Prep Onsite Mentor: Karen Knappenberger |
Project Abstract
In my project, I am looking at Korean love poems, written by women, and how they've changed over three different times in Korea's history. I am focusing on one poem per author and one author per time period. I’m beginning with the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), moving to the Japanese Colonization of Korea (1910-1945), and then finishing off with the Korean war and the aftermath (1950-1970’s). As a final product, I am writing my own poetry in the same styles and following the same patterns (i.e. tone or diction) that are prevalent throughout the women's works. I am also writing a research paper detailing these periods and how they influenced women and their literature.
It’s the End! (Conclusion Post)
This does not feel real. It’s my last post!! This has been a crazy experience and I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve gotten from my teachers, my advisors, and Mrs Cohen. They’ve all been monumental in getting as far as I have, and I can’t stress that enough. I had so... Read More
Presentations Are Depressingly Informative (Week 10)
Hello everyone! I can’t believe it’s week 10 already! Time really flew by… This week has been extremely busy for me, yet it feels like nothing has happened at all. Sijo Ahead! (Week 9)
And we’re back! This past week was fun, I didn’t have to lecture so there was a lot less stress on my part. The kids worked on worksheets and a lot of them were starting to get the hang of sijo, so that was exciting. Yesterday, I went in, and it was day 1... Read More
Middle Schoolers, Who Knew? (Week 8)
Another week of teaching! I didn’t get to go back into the classroom again last week, but I've been twice this week so far, and am planning to come in again on Thursday. Yesterday was kimchi day, though! It was so good. Like I said last post, Mrs. K makes her own kimchi, so... Read More

Preparing Myself To Face The Masses (Week 6)
Hello everyone! This week I started my literature review. Kim-unnie is helping me through that, giving me pointers and suggestions as we go. It’s pretty easy, especially with my results section officially done. That section is acting like a guide for everything else and it’s honestly a big weight off of my shoulders. ... Read More

Welcome back! This week, I didn’t do much for my research itself. I did go to Boston, MA, though! I got to see the Museum of Fine Arts, where I read a lot about the art from the Joseon period. There were a lot of ceramic pieces and a few paper dividers that were... Read More
Now We’re Gettin’ Into It! More History (Sorry Not Sorry). (Week 4)
This week, I thought I would touch on the Japanese Colonization Era. When I was originally forming my project, I didn’t even know about this era; I had to have one of my advisors suggest it. We never learned about this period of Korea’s history, at least that I paid attention to. It’s likely because... Read More

Kim-Unnie’s Wisdom: Results First, Introduction Later, Endeavors In Love Poems (Week 2)
This week I started working on my final paper! It’s kind of weird, Kim-unnie is having me write my results section before even the introduction... It’s unconventional, but honestly, it’s helping me organize everything and it's more fun this way. She’s been very helpful. The other part of my week so far has been analyzing... Read More
