Final stretch

TRIGGER WARNING: spiders, red flesh, maybe a wee to much blood, eyes

My last blog post I ended off on doing the base coats on Anthony and Derek. Well the base coats didn’t make them look great so I was a little worried that I had just ruining it.

But with the power of dry brushing I was able to get a lot of detail in (almost) every part.

I do want to leave the final product for the reveal at my presentation so I will be showing picture but they are going to be super zoomed in so you can’t really see anything except for what I want you to.

The first thing that I did was make the texture on Derek as realistic as I could. Which means I mixed so many different shades of red and orange and slapped it on Derek till it looked good and rotten enough. I also painted the eyes, I wanted the eyes to pop so I made them vainy and gross.

I then made every open wound very red with a copious amount of red paint (this is really where the blood comes in). I wanted to make these realistic too but I’m not sure if I succeeded in that.

I was procrastinating painting the spiders because I knew they were going to suck. I was using a paint brush to paint them black but my brother asked why I wasn’t using spray paint. So I covered everything in paper to protect it and it took like 10 minutes (thank you brother). After the base coat was on I dry brushed some brown to make the spider pop.

After that I started working on the water, I used clear caulking and isopropyl alcohol. I would put some caulking down then coat my hands (I was wearing gloves) in isopropyl alcohol and poke it until it looked like water. The isopropyl alcohol would stop the caulking from sticking to my hands.

On a side note I might have breathed in too may toxic vapors last night and I can still smell it now. Doesn’t smell great.

Again, I zoomed in on the pictures so you can’t really see all of it but I hope the idea is there.

But in good news I have finished painting and only have a few final things to do. Yay, finally! Thanks for following along.

no No NO! I want to see more! That looks amazing. I understand not showing the whole thing. The back mouth looks especially good. I'm excited to see the entire thing during your presentation.

Oh my gosh, wow!!! So what is your plan to bring the giant sculpture to the school?

Uh, my brother thinks we can get it into the bed of his truck and drive at 10 mph on the side of the road with his hazards on. So kind of a plan but I always say that the best plan is no plan. We shall see how it goes.

Nice! The textures play such a huge role in bringing the sculpture together, so even seeing smaller snapshots is super interesting. Will the water just be around Anthony's ankles? Thanks!

Yeah, the textures are really what brought it all together. The water is on the entire base behind the door frame. So a lot of clear caulking.
