Project Title: AHHHH, A SPIDER! A Physical Representation of the Mind’s Fears and Phobias.
BASIS Advisor: Rachel Joiner
Internship Location: Beyond the Pines Counseling
Onsite Mentor: Cody Bayles

Project Abstract

Phobias are in both ways overlooked and heavily researched. They are prevalent in society but not many actually understand what they mean and entail. I want to use this project to show the importance of fear in our society and how throughout the ages fear has been used to create and inspire art. Phobias are important to research and understand because they often reflect our society in the aspect of what we fear, and throughout history those fears have been showcased with art and too many examples to count. I will be doing my project independently while completing it on my own time and sculpting in my garage. A sculpture that you can walk around and touch provides a heavier reaction to the fears than any drawing could and being able to walk around and spot new details each time gives a new level of involvement to the piece. I hope that this project will showcase all the phobias that I have chosen and show just how much fear is ingrained into us as a society and an individual.
