Adventures of the ✨tiny hammer✨

Samantha g -

Hello world. This blog is again going to be me catching everyone up on where I am at with my sculpture. I have done a lot on this monster since the last picture you saw so get ready for even more pictures!

Lets get right into it, the last picture I shared was how I covered the tin foil in some clay. Well guess what? I started by covering more of the tin foil in clay. Yay! This past week has been a lot of the same steps over and over again. I would grab a ball of clay then roll it into a thin slab, after it was the right thickness I would slap it onto the tin foil and make it flush with the other clay. I did this until I ran out of clay (I haven’t mentioned this before but I have spent so much money on clay. The first order I did was 5 buckets of 4.5Lbs each and that costed $237.74. I then ordered that same thing two more times because I kept running out). Anyway here are some pictures!

I also covered the back half in clay but I’m confusing myself with the pictures I took. I don’t know how the pictures are in some weird order in my camera roll but they are. You’ll see the back half covered soon (I think).

After I ran out of clay for the second time I started to work on other things, like the black thing around Anthony’s waist (by the way I did name my sculpture, the human part is Anthony and the monster part is Derek. This will be a common theme that you will see). I started to cut out parts of the leg and arms to get ready for the mouths! Whoo!

Oh yeah, I also put tin foil on the black part to get ready for the arms that are going to be wrapped around Anthony. I have been kind of sporadic (scattered if you will) in the parts that I work on. I do multiple little things at once that aren’t the same form of tedious so I don’t go crazy doing the same thing over and over.

Anyway, for the mouth parts I cut out a chunk of clay and ripped out a bunch of tin foil. Then I used probably my all time favorite tool I have used so far… ✨tiny hammer✨ to pack the tin foil down until I could cover it with a thin piece of clay.

I then started to make all of the hands that I will need. I’m not even kidding, I need so many. I think the total was 8 hands and 1 ✨tiny hand✨ (I can’t help but put sparkles). I took a PVC pipe and hot glued wire to it then shaped the wire and added on tin foil till I got my desired handy shape. I swear the tin foil keeps coming back to haunt me. You really have to trust the process with these, that’s what I kept telling myself and I think it worked.

In the last picture if you look really closely you can see the infamous ✨tiny hammer✨ in the corner which I used to fine tune the shape of every hand I made. bestest tool ever!

For these pictures I used a gorilla super glue bottle as a size reference. Is a gorilla super glue bottle the best size comparing object… probably not, is it the first thing I saw… yes. Maybe it’s better if you see it compared to my face.

Keep in mind that I am at a lofty 5’2 of below average height so that hand is big.

Anyway after I made all of those hands (I think I still have like 3 more to go) I got tired of it so I started to do probably the worst part of this sculpture for me specifically. I started to sculpt spiders (ew).

I have a running gag that every monster I make is my child. So all the monsters that I have made in AP ceramics (will probably show them at some point) are my children. So naturally Anthony and Derek are my children as well, and these three spiders are my unwanted grandchildren. The top one is Gary, middle is Nifty, and bottom is Gerald. Oh look at the common theme of naming things that I mentioned before! I really am going insane.

Anyway, I attached all of the hands and took a final picture of what it looks like as of 10:35 pm Tuesday March 4th.

Again if you look close enough at the last picture you can see all of my unwanted grandchildren on the floor.

That is where I am at right now. Thank you for reading and following along in my madness.

P.S. At the end of the day yesterday I ended up threatening my best friends computer with the ✨tiny hammer✨ and it started to work! The power of the ✨tiny hammer✨.

That ✨tiny hammer✨ saved my life. I will never forget the sacrifices you made.

Wow, Sam...you really are into the naming thing, hmm? What are you going to do with all those hands?

Yup! How can I not name my children, I'm not a monster (I love all of them equally... kinda). Anyway, in the last picture I showed you can see 5 of them that are attached to the 5 arms (2 on Anthony and 3 on Derek), two of them are going to be attached around Anthony's waist where the black is, and the final one is going to be coming out of the big mouth on Anthony's right leg.

Hi Sam, as the sculpture is starting to take shape, I can see how each part came from the original concept art. Are you still planning on having Derek be covered in eyes? Thanks!
      samantha_g
I'm glad the concept art is starting to make sense! I am still planning to cover Derek in eyes as that will represent scopophobia which is the fear of being watched. Derek and the back of Anthony will be covered in eyes (sculpting the eyes is actually really fun, I've started to do it and I'm having the time of my life).

Wow, I also have a tiny multi-tool hammer that I keep on my desk. It is one of my most prized possessions so I understand your love for your tiny hammer! The spiders look so awesome and very professionally made, how did you make them?
      samantha_g
Everyone should have a version of a tiny hammer! And the spiders aren't really that professional. I cut 8 pieces of wire and bend them into spidery leg shapes (really hurt my hands doing this) then make a blob out of clay and stuck the wire into it. Really simple but it still took so much time because of the sheer amount I had to make.

Hey Sam, your sculpture is coming together really well. I see there will be a bunch of hands around the frame and Anthony. Is there a specific way you made and shaped the hands, or did you just carefully use ✨tiny hammer✨ because they look really good with only a simple wire frame?
      samantha_g
Thank you! I actually did most of the shaping by hand (no pun intended lol) and then used the ✨tiny hammer✨ for the more detailed bends and curves. It’s surprisingly satisfying. I wanted the hands to feel expressive but still kind of raw, so I kept the frames simple. You really have to trust the process for these because they don't look that great in the beginning.
