Week 6: Fans, Fields, Feels

Emerson D -

Let’s get started!

As I mentioned in my last post, the weekend was very action-packed. It was amazing to see what goes into supporting the game-time experience and to meet all the other great volunteers. I showed up to help with setup a couple of hours before the “doors opened,” and I even ended up meeting the owner of the DC Shadow team, who was also helping out!

I primarily managed ticket sales and entry into the game, which was a new experience for me. I got to see the excitement on all the fans’ faces. Something that surprised me was the average age group attending—it was actually younger (college-aged) than I had originally expected. There ended up being around 427 fans (a number I heard from the commentators during active gameplay). That’s a lot of people!

After handling tickets, I got to be on the sidelines—right next to the players and coaches!
LET’S GO DC SHADOW!!!
It was an amazing game, with Shadow blowing Atlanta Soul out of the water on the scoreboard.

I also attended one of the final DC Rally tryouts, where there was a much smaller group compared to the first one. During practice, I talked with coaches about what they were looking for during each play and activity, which was super interesting. It was also great to see the coaches taking a very hands-on approach—jumping into drills and scrimmages as active players.

New Developments:
I’ll hopefully be volunteering/working with DC Breeze (the men’s pro team here in DC), as well as continuing with DC Shadow and DC Rally. I’m excited!!

As for reading/research: it’s been going well, but slowly. I plan to get more organized in the next few weeks to make getting through books and sources a smoother process.

Until next week, I bid you adieu
