Week 4 – Learning to Rebuild

Victoria C -

Hi everyone and welcome back!

I hope you all enjoyed last week’s blog post! Now lets dive into what I have been up to since then!

This week at my internship I helped out with preparing and setting up the orientation for the Design in Action (DIA) program. This involved last minute details to the student and firm placements, making sure each student had a interview or meeting set up with their assigned firm, and I also arranged a quick description of each firm and the area it is in for the students. The DIA program is planned to start next week and while each student is shadowing at their firm they will be working on their own plan/project (more to come of this next week).

I will also begin shadowing at an Urban Planning firm next week, I am super excited to start and receive more guidance on my DC related topics to my senior project. These topics include gentrification and housing in cities and how does gentrification arise in cities and solutions to prevent it, how does policy play a role in urban planning, and the importance of sustainability in urban planning. I know some these topics are a little broad but I am hoping to get some good discourse on them next week!

Check back next week to see how my first couple days shadowing at the Urban Planning firm go and next week I will expand more on Los Angeles Urban Planning!

Thanks for reading and I hope you’ve enjoyed this weeks blog post!

Omg your upcoming shadowing at Urban Planning sounds so exciting! I think gentrification is a huge issue, especially in Washington, DC. I think DC is such a hotbed of gentrification because of the mix of government workers who move here and DC residents who have lived here since birth. Super interesting topic to explore! Can't wait to hear about that you get up to next week.

I couldn't agree more it is so upsetting to see more and more communities pushed out for new more expensive retail and commercial spaces.
