Week 3: Data, Disparities, and Drawings
Tais M -
Hey blog! How are you doing?
This week I ran into a slight roadblock. I figured out my project isn’t gonna work. Partially at least. Maternal Mortality Rates for DC are Vital Records, which I can’t get access to. My original plan included a first research question where I worked with this data. This question was; 1) Have Maternal Mortality Rates fluctuated around key events in women’s health history? These events being Roe v. Wade, Dobbs v. Jackson, and the inception of Obamacare.
I planned to analyze Maternal Mortality Rates from before and after these events and see if there were any notable increases or decreases. Unfortunately, as I said earlier, I can’t get access to MMR per year in DC so I won’t exactly be able to investigate this question. I’ll have to work with the available data and already analyzed rates from various reports and articles, like the Maternal Mortality Review Committee’s reports. I think I will shift my first research question to be analyzing the disparities in Maternal Mortality Rates within DC.
For now, I’m just gathering research, details, and inspiration for my videos. I recently saw a poster when I was walking around DC that was pro-choice. It had really impactful but minimalistic designs and I hope to be able to create drawings/animations like it for my video. I’m drafting it this week and next and hope to begin soon! Below is the poster I saw, see you next week!
