Week 2: Getting into the flow of things

Elliot D -

Well well well another Wednesday another post for the fans! Having now spent more than a full week working at rhizome I’d like to think I’m very experienced. I’ve started my work from home, mostly in the form of little backend upkeep on the website, but also in making the playlists(this weeks can be found here https://bndcmpr.co/7815eda6)

Last Friday I participated in a call with a few of the artists and coordinators working on the MLK exhibit, discussing how the space could be used, what among the mass of archived ephemera would be presented, how it would be presented, etc. To be frank a lot of it went way over my head, I know nothing about setting up an exhibit, much less the nitty gritty design details and technical requirements. The call was still super informative, giving me a much better picture of what they were going for with the exhibit and how Rhizome fits into that. It was also super interesting, I love learning about the processes that people go through in doing whatever it is they do, particularly when it comes to art, and being there for these technical discussions of exhibit design was fascinating.

The following Saturday, I worked my first show! I got there early to photograph the current exhibit, Farrukh Adnan’s Mapping the Unseen. From there I helped a bit with sound and setup, and then worked the door for the rest of the show, all while jamming out to the artists playing that night. I’ll be working another show this Friday, this time a hardcore benefit show for LA fire releif, very much my speed in terms of shows. I’ll be working doors and if possible shadowing sound, along with just making sure everything and everyone’s doing okay. On that note I’ll be going to a de-escalation training on Sunday with Rhizome volunteers, which will be super useful now and in my future and will also give me a chance to get to know more of said volunteers.

In terms of my own senior project work, I’ve just put Kevin Mattson’s We’re Not Here to Entertain on hold at the library, so I’ll be getting into that soon. I’ve also reached out to a couple potential interviews, and so far have at least 1 big one lined up!

In light of me drawing my attention back to the ‘past’ side of my project, This week’s album recommendation is Fugazi’s 13 songs, a staple of any post-hardcore fan’s music library.

somehow I think that 13 songs is going to be a little intense for me, but its queued up so we'll see! I'm glad your internship is going well! What band was playing Saturday for your first show? Were they good?

It was opened by a local band called Boat Burning, and then it was cellist Aliya Ultan on tour with noisemaker St. Celfer, not my usual kind of show but it was still super fun and the music was really interesting.

What's in the exhibit currently up, as in, what did you get to photograph. Was it related to the ongoing shows? Sounds fab tho, can't wait for more.

the pieces were mostly pen on paper, I believe the guiding principle was one of continually marking and removing with some sort of emphasis on, well, mapping, but I'm not exactly sure of the details.

It’s so cool to see how much ground you’re covering already! Excited to see how the exhibit work and your interviews shape the next part of your project!

This is awesome! I'm hoping you're able to achieve what you want to do with MLK.
