Blog 8: Words to vision
Akilah Q -
Hey everyone!
This week, I’ve still been working on the final product portion of my senior project and officially began drafting parts of the story. While I’m still in the early stages of writing, putting my ideas into a structured form has helped me clarify the exact tone, message, and overall flow I want the final product to have. Right now, I’m thinking intentionally about the themes that have come up throughout my research and internship work especially the way folklore preserves memory, builds community.
As I write, I’m trying to be thoughtful about how to weave in elements inspired by traditional African and Afro-Caribbean folklore without directly copying any existing tales. Instead, I want to take inspiration from the deeper lessons and values those stories offer and create something that feels both grounded in that tradition and original in its own right. The story will center around symbolic figures and ideas rather than specific historical events, but the goal is to reflect real-world cultural themes in a meaningful and creative way.
I’m excited to see how things develop as I continue drafting, and I’ve already noticed that my research is showing up in the small details. Whether it’s through character names, settings, or imagery, the influences of Anansi, the Flying Africans, and other figures I’ve studied are definitely coming through. I’ll keep working and refining in the coming weeks.
Looking forward to sharing more soon!
