Week 7: Media Trained

Adhip J -

Welcome back for Week 7!!

We’re back to our origins, writing from Crave alongside a hot chocolate with amazing espresso art!

As mentioned in my previous post, I was tasked with brainstorming new methods for producing content that would simplify complex scientific topics or developments into understandable media for the general public. After hours of brainstorming ideas and considering new possibilities, I compiled a list of ideas and potential methods through which our lab could reach a larger audience.

On Thursday evening, I had an incredibly productive meeting with my mentor, with whom I exchanged ideas and offered the suggestions that I had come up with. We agreed that adding a resource page to the lab’s website, which would provide a central hub for resources, would be one of the next steps to pursue. Especially in connection with the work I did during Week 1 and Week 2, such a page would allow students and other persons of the public to easily find information and aid on complex topics.

Additionally, I suggested providing increased training for educators and parents, especially when it comes to autism spectrum disorder. My mentor agreed and also told me about the challenges that educators face at higher education levels, such as university professors who struggle with understanding how to navigate learning disorders and other student disabilities.

She proceeded to connect me with the lab’s media content associate, who is in charge of helping the lab with producing the content and media that has been previously discussed. In the future, I will be working alongside him often, especially when thinking about my final project and deliverable.

Again, if anyone has any suggestions or personal stories that you believe would be beneficial to my project and the larger goals of increasing disability understanding and accessibility, please let me know!!

That’s all from me this week! See y’all next Friday!!

Wow Adhip! It's really interesting how you are positively affecting the community during this project! Have you learned anything about what professors can do to help students with disabilities?

Hello Adhip, I'm glad the project seems to be having such an impact! Do you think it'll be a long time before these media and website pages will be able to be implemented?

Hey Adhip, it is exciting to see how your efforts are being implemented! What type of resources do you plan to include on this web page?

Hey Elle, we're actually going to dive deeper into that topic this week!! I really want to pinpoint how we can help teachers and students, but the biggest challenge will be implementing training routines.

Hey Jude! We actually have an outside source for the media content, so I can't really speak much about the deadlines, but on the content that I can make, I hope to have a few educational platforms out by mid to end April.

Hey Thomas, my vision is that we hold scientific topics and community outreach. So, maybe one content explains FXTAS while the other speaks about including autistic children in local camps and summer programs.
