Project Title: Mind Your Language: Addressing Neurodegenerative Diseases Through Language and Genetics BASIS Advisor: Becky Grant Internship Location: Lifespan Language Lab, University of Arizona Onsite Mentor: Dr. Nell Maltman |
Project Abstract
Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) is a late-onset neurodegenerative disorder affecting carriers of the fragile X premutation, leading to deficits in verbal fluency, working memory, and motor function. Research indicates that FXTAS develops in approximately 40% of male and 16% of female carriers due to differences in FMR1 gene expression. The research focused on understanding the Lifespan Language Lab's NIH-funded project on FXTAS, which examined the FMR1 and APOE genes alongside self-reported vestibular function metrics like gait and balance. This research has the potential to enhance predictive models for disease progression and inform targeted interventions. This project aimed to provide a platform through which the lab can organize future outreach events and create a systemized platform that streamlines this process and allows for comprehensive public education through simplified methods. The main goals were to educate the public on scientific advancements such as the lab's research on FXTAS, establish a centralized disability resource portal at the University of Arizona, and create better ways to aid individuals on the autism spectrum with challenges such as law enforcement interactions.
