Blog 008: Building Crics and Communities
Herron B -
Good Afternoon! It’s Herron and I bring you another week of thrilling events on week 8 of my internship at ASTEC!
Monday started with volunteering at AZ SIMWars, a competition where AZ EM residents compete in a series of simulated scenarios to find the best group. I mainly stayed in the control room where I watched as the residents overcame ICU scenarios, Pool Party scenarios, etc. This competition helped me realize what ASTEC and their simulators can provide besides technology: community. I watched the residents stress, think, and laugh all together as a group. On Tuesday, I mainly spent my time re-building the cric kits used to help ATLS students with their certification. I found it very amusing to re-tape the hole representing the cricoid membrane and set up the model used to keep the model skin graft stable. On Thursday, I spent my time in the storage room, cleaning up the BVM storage bins and reorganizing the adult BVMs, pediatric BVMs, adult oxygen tubing, and pediatric oxygen tubing.
Most of my time spent off-site was on planning and preparing the video series for my final project. My plan is to record all 6 videos on the last week of my internship and to finish editing on the weekend prior to the deadline. I want to at least have one day to showcase the project to my mentor in case any revisions need to be made.
I can’t wait for week 9 and I wish you all the best of your days! Thank you!
