Project Title: Bring Out the Manikins!: Interning at the University of Arizona’s Simulation Center BASIS Advisor: Matt Johnston Internship Location: Arizona Simulation Technology & Education Center (ASTEC) Onsite Mentor: Merryl Lopido |
Project Abstract
Medical Simulators provide learners with extra experience in multiple environments from the ICU to the OR while preventing the risk of medical malpractice or mishaps. Additionally, as technology progresses, these simulators will continue to become more valuable in the healthcare field. Simulators also provide an extra layer of knowledge that physicians can gain to achieve more successful procedures in the long run. At the University of Arizona’s Arizona Simulation Technology & Education Center (ASTEC), I learned about the impact of these medical simulations in real time and studied the ways that the faculty and staff utilize these technological advancements. My close collaboration with medical professionals from the undergraduate to the residential level provides me with insight into the future landscape of the medical field and the underlying impacts that these centers will provide to future nurses and doctors. As an intern, I had the ability to shadow classes, observe professionals, and learn what creates a healthy and effective environment to maximize the learner’s potential.
