Blog 004: Rolling Up the Sleeves!

Herron B -

Good Afternoon! My name is Herron and welcome to this week’s blog! After weeks of trying new drinks, I want to excitedly share that I might have found my go-to drink from Black Rock: A shaken espresso with caramel macchiato flavors and vanilla cold foam. In the coming weeks, we will see if a new drink can take the crown!

This week I found myself doing a lot of set-up/clean-up work for both the simulators and labs! On Tuesday, I helped build around 10 stools that were recently delivered to the building. I can now proudly say that I can use an allen wrench like no other. I actually found it quite peaceful starting my day with a mundane task after all the events of last week. On Thursday, I spent most of my time cleaning the ventilation manikins after a group of learners used them for their class. I also helped set up the manikins for undergraduate students in their club! The highlight of that day was watching the faculty of the club teach the students how to use a bag-valve mask and how to intubate a patient! Experiences like this help me realize how much knowledge I gain from shadowing faculty and staff to reading presentations and articles. Friday consisted of cleaning all the manikins, including both the ventilation and full-body manikins, and reorganizing the rooms in preparation for the classes on Monday.

As we inch closer to the final weeks of my internship, I’ve given my final project lots of thought. From small-scale projects to very, very large-scale ideas, I am still thinking of a project that brings awareness to the future of medical education, brings together all the skills and knowledge I’ve gained from the site, and is true to me. Once I find one that checks all these criteria, I think we’ll start to have even more fun. I will see you all next week!

Hey Herron! I'm really happy to hear that your week went well, that you enjoyed all your tasks, and that you learned a lot from them! Do you think you will mainly showcase your personal experiences in learning all your skills in your main project, or will you showcase them as a piece of your project on medical education?

Hey Herron! It's great to hear that your project is going well! What are some differences you noticed in how the students approached the BVM and intubation this week compared to how they approached the cardiac emergencies last week?

Hey Herron, could you further explain how peaceful those mundane tasks were? I hope the chairs work well, have a good break!!

Hello Herron! What is one of your top possible choices for how you will do your final project?

Hi Connor! Thank you for the kind comments! I do intend to use my personal experiences to play a bigger part on my final project! I believe that my current opinions on medical education as a prospective students is very valuable because it'll provide insight on students my age who are considering the medical field.

Karthik! I saw many differences between how students interacted with the BVM compared to the cardiac emergencies, but I would mostly accredit that to the differing levels of experiences between both groups. For the BVM and Intubation class, the class composed of undergraduate students in a physiology club. For the cardiac emergencies, it consisted of purely medical students preparing for clerkship.

Lucas! Although I found the task to initially be mundane, I thought about my future roles in the medical field. Not everything in the field will have high-pressure scenarios that stress you out. There will be times where you are just organizing files or cleaning rooms and I believe that these tasks are vital to keep medical professionals both present and balanced!

Hey Vera! My top choice for my final project is to make a virtual journal of all the skills I've learned in ASTEC! I want to create a series of videos that teach learners how to operate or handle certain scenarios!
