Week 5 – 3/21/25

Ethan F -

Hi everyone! I continued my research at my site. was recently able to witness the entire process of designing and placing a dental crown with cutting-edge technology. It started with an iTero Element® intraoral scan, which captured a very precise 3D image of the patients teeth in minutes—no gloopy molds required. The scan data was then imported into fastdesign.io™, where the crown was designed.“. The AI-powered technology examined the patient’s tooth and recommended a highly precise crown design from Glidewells extensive library of past cases. It only took the dentist a few minutes of slight adjustments to have the design ready in under five minutes.

Next, the case was submitted to the fastmill.io™ mill, where I watched a BruxZir NOW zirconia block being milled out to the finished crown. The precision of the milling was stunning, and since the material had already been sintered, there was no additional oven time neededThe crown was seated in less than 40 minutes. It seated beautifully on the first try, showing the precision of this digital process.

Artificial intelligence plays a major role in making this process more efficient by simplifying diagnostic accuracy, designing optimally, and reducing errors. To see this seamless integration of technology was an eye-opener—its dentistry on its cutting edge!

Best,

Ethan

Hi Ethan, Given your experience witnessing this cutting-edge process, I'm curious about the role of AI in quality control. How does the AI system ensure that the crown design it recommends is optimal for the specific patient's bite and occlusion? Are there any checks or validations performed by the AI before the final design is approved for milling?

The AI system ensures crown design optimization by analyzing the patient's unique scan data against its database of successful cases, factoring in bite dynamics and occlusion patterns, with built-in virtual occlusion checks and mandatory dentist verification before milling approval.

Hi Ethan! Great work! This post discusses AI-powered technology used in the design of the dental crown. How do you think the integration of AI in crown design influences the overall accuracy and speed of the procedure compared to traditional methods?

The integration of AI in dental crown design significantly enhances both accuracy and speed compared to traditional methods, achieving superior precision and reducing design time from days or weeks to mere minutes or hours.

Hey Ethan! Would you say the the AI-powered technology consistently requires only slight adjustments, or has it differed more in different situations?

Once the crown is inserted, the dentist/dental assistant usually have to make tweaks so that the bite isn't uncomfortable to the patient.
