The Road to a Music Exhibit: Senior Project Week 6

Evangeline C -

Hello, everyone! Welcome back to my blog!

This week, I worked a lot on my individual research regarding best practices for museum and exhibit design. It’s been a deep dive into creating engaging, informative, and immersive experiences for visitors.

In addition, we have also officially decided which musicians will be covered in the exhibit. It will include seven artists from a variety of genres that all performed/ contributed to the city:

  • Henry Mancini – Renowned for his iconic film scores and timeless compositions.
  • Arthur Fiedler – Best known for his 50-year tenure as the maestro of the Boston Pops Orchestra.
  • Les Brown – A celebrated bandleader and one of the pioneers of big band music.
  • Count Basie – A jazz legend who is considered one of the greatest bandleaders of all time, revolutionizing the genre.
    • His panel will also briefly touch on Ella Fitzgerald, as she was a surprise guest at his Fountain Hills concert.
  • The Gatlin Brothers – Country music icons with a long history of chart-topping hits.
  • Jeff Dayton – Known for his collaborations with country stars like Glen Campbell.
  • Whitney Houston – Renowned as a powerful singer, a cultural icon, and a best-selling musical performer

I researched a variety of props that could be used to accompany the information in the exhibit. These included:

  • 2D
    • photos
    • newspaper (covering the concerts contemporaneously)
    • sheet music
  • 3D
    • instruments
    • movie props ( Whitney Houston filmed a movie while in Fountain Hills)
    • movie poster
    • batons
    • records

Lastly, I’ve also written an introductory piece for the exhibit. This introduction will be used in various promotional materials, helping to set the stage for what visitors can expect.

Thank you, and see you next week!

Evangeline

Hi Evie! I'm super excited for this particular exhibit (naturally)! Do you think you would have a playlist of their songs playing at the exhibit, and if so, which artists would you feature? How would you choose which songs you want to include?

I'm so glad you're excited about the exhibit! I’ve actually been discussing the idea of curating a playlist for the exhibit with my advisor. She thinks it’s a great idea, but a challenge we are facing is making sure the music stays isolated to its exhibit, ensuring that it doesn’t distract from the other areas of the museum. We’re brainstorming how to find that balance with curating songs that enhance the atmosphere without overwhelming the experience or clashing with other parts of the space.

Hi Evangeline! It sounds like you’re making excellent progress. Are the artists featured in the exhibit from the same historical period, or do they represent various eras to showcase the evolution of musical tastes over the centuries?

Hi Evie, this is really exciting work! For some of the 3D displays, what types of movie props do you believe would be displayed?
