Senior Research Week 5- Shaheer Rehman
Hey everyone!
Welcome to Week 5 of my blog! This week, I continued my research into respiratory diseases and potential improvements for CPAP mask fittings. One of the biggest takeaways from this week was diving deeper into different medical approaches—specifically, the differences between allopathy, osteopathy, and homeopathy.
Allopathy, also known as conventional medicine, is the standard practice most doctors follow. It focuses on evidence-based treatments like medications, surgeries, and therapies. Osteopathy, while similar, emphasizes a more holistic approach, incorporating manual techniques like osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) alongside conventional medicine. Homeopathy, on the other hand, is an alternative approach that relies on highly diluted substances to trigger the body’s natural healing processes. While homeopathy isn’t widely accepted in mainstream medicine, learning about it gave me insight into the variety of medical philosophies that exist.
Understanding these different approaches helped me think critically about patient care, especially in the context of my CPAP research. While allopathic treatments provide essential interventions, osteopathy’s emphasis on body mechanics made me consider how CPAP mask fit could be influenced by facial structure and muscle tension. This week, I also continued looking into ways to create custom CPAP masks. I’ve been researching potential 3D scanning and printing methods that could allow for a personalized fit, which could significantly improve patient comfort and compliance.
As always, I’m excited to keep learning and refining my project. Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you next week!
