Behind the Scenes of Radiology: How Images Shape Healthcare

Greetings to all,
I’m Jessie Zhang, planning on interning in radiology at Mayo Clinic’s Scottsdale campus (https://college.mayo.edu/campus-and-community/arizona/locations/#scottsdale). Radiology is often an overlooked physician specialty, but it certainly remains one of the most important in the medical field. In every aspect of healthcare, we rely on radiology–from monitoring patients’ health status, to formulating treatment plans, to providing early diagnosis. Even with the discovery of capillaries and the identification of tumors, medicine has reached where it is today largely due to advanced imaging techniques. What’s more, advancements in radiology have in no form reached a stopping point. The prospects of this field continue to exponentially expand. Currently, deep tissue imaging holds my greatest interest as it allows us to not only see cells dividing within tumors but also how our bodies respond to drugs in real time. By combining cutting-edge imaging technologies with regenerative therapies, researchers are able to visualize the repair process concurrently and in significant detail—tracking cellular changes, tissue growth, and the effectiveness of treatments.
However, as expected, there are still numerous challenges involved with imaging in radiology, the main one being data processing. How can researchers find new ways to organize and process all the extensive data so that deep tissue imaging technology can reach its fullest potential in the field of healthcare? While interning at Mayo Clinic, I will study all aspects of medical 3D printing, gaining exposure to the timely production of high quality 3D anatomic models for use in surgical planning. I hope that through this internship, I can gain more insight into the issues surrounding data processing and perhaps even contribute to finding solutions to overcome those challenges.
