Week #9: Idiosyncratic and Unique writing

J Burns -

The difficult thing about writing a story with a synesthete as the main character is that every instance of synesthesia is different. Even those with the same kinds of synesthesia have idiosyncratic experiences, meaning details like colors, sounds, or sensations will be difference. This means that I have a lot of creative freedom within my story. My own experiences and what I’ve heard from those I’ve interviewed has informed my interpretation within these chapters. I’m also trying to add a diverse view of synesthesia, with multiple other kinds and colors. Exploring these types has helped me learn more about myself, others, and even the world of art as a whole. It’s important that I can accurately convey this so that others have the opportunity to discover the art and beauty in our hidden senses.

Statistically, finding as many as I’m trying to add would be more common in the art communities, so I’m trying to add that detail as well. In the meantime, I’m working with the plot to give it a story without overloading on details, but this should be rich with information. I figure the best way to do this within the confines of the story is to have the character go through a learning experience with synesthesia themself. Thus the plan is that they have limited knowledge, like from what I’ve seen most people do, but learn about more types of synesthesia before even realizing they experience them.

While I was unable to get more responses last week, I did spend time analyzing more of the resources that weren’t explaining the questions I set out to answer but did provide firsthand accounts. I knew generally how it would trend, but a lot of the books and results were more insightful than I initially thought, pointing to specific scans and visuals that I don’t unfortunately have permissions to share. Hopefully, I’ll finish my first draft this week, and I’m excited to share it with everyone as well as being able to share the things I’ve learned in the presentations.

I think that idea for your story sounds really good! I've never thought about how you have to figure out what settings and conflicts will fit the story you're trying to write, so that is good that you are including art and the plot of discovering one's own synesthesia.

It's been kind of hard to work on because there's a lot to say on the subject and literally thousands of different perspectives. It's unlike other conditions that way because no one will have the exact same perception or descriptions of anything. But aside from that, the side plot and characters necessary to the story don't fit into the main plot unless it's a big pool of synesthetes.
