From Passion to Project – Blog 1

Moorea C -

Ever since I was young, I have had two major passions in life: teaching and protecting the environment. So what better to do than combine these two loves and turn them from passion to project. Hi everyone! My name is Moorea and I am beyond excited to be sharing the ins and outs of my research journey with you all. I am a senior here at BASIS Prescott in Arizona and my project is titled “Teaching Green: The Process of Creating an Environmental Curriculum for Lower Elementary Students”. I plan to take a deep dive into the process of creating a curriculum for young students that teaches them about one of the most heavily discussed topics in our society, the state of our environment. I have always held a strong belief that the children of this generation and ones to come have a curiosity to learn about many things, including more complicated topics like this one. Throughout this research process, I hope to find the best ways to implement these topics into the classroom and to look at which instructional methods work best to properly engage students of this age in the environment. I will be doing a lot of my own research looking into topics like creating curriculum, developing lessons and activities, student engagement, environmental schools, and more. I then plan to conduct interviews with lower elementary teachers that have experience teaching about the environment to learn from their professional perspective. Once I have gathered all my information, I will be putting everything I have learned to the test in a real world environment by creating my own lesson and activity about recycling to teach to the 2nd and 3rd grade classes here at BASIS Prescott. I am so excited to be putting my two biggest passions together in this project and can not wait to take you all along with me. Thank you so much for following along!

I am so excited to see where this project takes you, Moorea! I know you will make something amazing through this experience. Are there any obstacles you foresee yourself encountering whether it be through your research, curriculum creation, or actual teaching experience?

Good question Ivy! There are two main obstacles I foresee myself encountering: interviews and the teaching experience. For the interviews, it's simply the worry that I won't get enough interviews that I would like to have but I plan on combating that issue with something I will talk about in my next blog. As for the teaching experience, the biggest group of kids I have taught has been around 7 kids so going from that to around 30 per class will come as a challenge. But I hope to gain knowledge from all of my research that will help to better prepare me for that endeavor!
