Blog 4: The Good, The Educational, and The Productive

Iva-Mae B -

Wow, I got to do a lot of different things this week! I did at least a little bit of everything–research, client work, project feedback, and more. Let’s get right into it.

I started doing some more targeted research on the steps to developing a brand and have learned a lot. In an article on the subject called “Building a brand – a step-by-step guide” by the Adobe Experience Cloud Team, I learned that an important factor is that you have to be really in tune with what you want out of your business before you can even start creating the “look” itself. For example, if your primary consumers are parents of infants then your packaging or website will probably look very different than if it is for business adults. However, since I am creating a personal designing brand, I don’t have an audience to target just yet. I will have more to report as I discover what I want my brand’s voice and look to be like and really delve into the more tangible components of the brand development process.

I learned so much at Sadie Sarti Design this week. I am ecstatic at just how much they are entrusting me with. I was under the impression that I would strictly shadow and do tasks for them, but I am actually already contributing to real client work! On Tuesday, I finished up as much as I could on my outdoor sign designs (which I will share below), and then I did edits for a book that one of the employees has been working on. The book displayed mainly pictures of a local artist’s work, along with several quotes. My main job was to put a vertical line next to all of the quotes and align them correctly on the page. I was actually in Indesign for this project, so I learned a lot about the application itself since I am less familiar with it. The task sounds simple, but it was actually quite tedious, searching for all the pages with quotes in a roughly 130 page book and getting it all consistent. Ultimately, I found it very fun as I was doing something new and learning so much along the way. On Thursday, I spent most of my time organizing Sadie’s task management website for the team, which was also very interesting.

And lastly, for the moment we’ve all been waiting for… feedback on the packaging insert project! Tim was out of town a lot the last two weeks, but we finally managed to meet up today to go over the project. As it was my first project that I’ve ever done all by myself, I was ready for disappointment, but to my surprise, Tim actually quite liked them! He showed me some other examples of good and bad inserts that we could compare to and then we went over my designs. Ultimately he really liked the front of one and the back of another (see pictures below), so I am going to develop a couple more designs for the insert based on what we decided could be better and what was good. Tim’s main critique was that some of the pages were a little boring, and I could improve them with a little more texture or color. I’ll keep you all posted on how this project evolves in the coming week or so!

That is really cool that they are including you in their client work! Your sign and insert look amazing so far! I also can't wait to see how they turns out. What has been your favorite project you have worked on so far? What else have you been looking at for research into your brand?
