A Rollercoaster of Emotions-Blog 2

Moorea C -

Hey everyone!

My first week has been off to a wonderful and very busy start, but I have definitely run into a few issues already! I had two main focuses of the week: preparing for interviews and researching curriculum for lower elementary.

Starting off with the interview prep, I plan on interviewing professionals in the realm of environmental education in California and Arizona. The focus of my interviews is to gain a more realistic and professional (teacher or principal) explanation of the process of working at a school that has a curriculum developed for young students to learn about the environment. With this process I have ran into a few small issues. Starting off with California, the unfortunate development of the fires a few weeks ago have made me going over to interview slightly more complicated than expected. Currently, schools are very busy dealing with the process of supporting their communities through this tragedy so making time for interviews is not at the top of the agenda. As for Arizona, because it is not currently a state that is well known for a focus on the environment, the process of finding schools that fit my research is more difficult to do. However, I plan to combat these issues by creating a survey for educators that has the same questions I would have otherwise asked in an interview to fill in any missing spots I previously planned for interviews. I plan to get this survey out by taking advantage of the generations social media outlet by creating a professional public account on Instagram and Facebook for my project (more on this next week).

To end things on a lighter note, my research for curriculum development has been going very smoothly! The most important part about developing my curriculum is that I create it while keeping the students in mind, and what better way to do that than to place myself in their shoes for a bit! I have been spending a lot of time at the Prescott Valley library reading children’s books for ages 6-10 to get a proper look into the literature students of this age group are used to reading. This process will help me create worksheets for the classes that keep in mind the average sentence structure, vocab, story length, and visual aids that students are used to seeing in and out of the classroom.

Even though my research journey has a bit of a rocky start, I have no doubt in my mind that I will be able to work out the issues I have come across and am excited to see how things play out! Thanks so much for reading and have a wonderful day!

Sounds like you are cruising right along. Coming up against challenges is all a part of the process, but it looks like you are troubleshooting them well. Keep up the good work!

Ooh. Goodluck. I am also struggling to find interviews, but the vast amount of literature on my project helps slightly. I hope we both can find some more candidates to interview

Good luck with your project! It's a very unfortunate state of things that finding a venue to teach environmental science is so difficult. The survey is a great idea to avoid these difficulties.

I love the idea of using a survey. While not ideal, I hope it will still help you get the research you need. What kind of questions are you planning to ask on the survey and in any possible interviews?

Thanks Ben! And yes the survey's are off to a great start so far, I'll be discussing that process in my upcoming blog.

Couldn't agree more and hopefully that literature helps with that!

I hope you can find more people to interview soon. It's unfortunate that you lost a lot of your interviews, but the survey is a great idea, and I have no doubt that you will find more people through social media! Are your survey responses going to be anonymous or will you include people's credentials in your survey questions?

Thanks for the question Zoey! All of the surveys will be anonymous, but I will be thoroughly going through each one to make sure the answers are legitimate.

Great question Skylar! I'm asking questions about how their professional experience has been teaching young students about the environment and looking into and challenges they have had as well as how they best engage students.
