Opening the First Chapter

Hello, my name is Skylar C., and for the last trimester of my senior year I am going to be interning at the Prescott Public Library for my project. For as long as I can remember, I have loved to visit the library and often walked out the doors with a large stack of books in my hands. Because of this, I am greatly looking forward to this chance to work more behind the scenes and interact with the staff of one of my local libraries. It will be a great opportunity for me to learn about my community and libraries at large all while being in one of my favorite places. 

My focus in volunteering will be to research the ways that local libraries are able to preserve the history of their community and how this impacts their community members. I will mainly be working on a project at the library digitizing old documents and records from Prescott history. On my own, I will research by reading multiple books and articles on the topics of libraries and preservation to help add to what I learn at the internship. I am excited to start this project and can’t wait to learn as much as I can! A link to the Prescott Public Library’s website is listed below.

    This project sounds like it is going to be very interesting! What made you want to research Prescott history and preservation specifically? I imagine there are a lot of behind-the-scenes aspects to a library that you could've delved into instead.

    I didn't initially plan on focusing on history, but after the library told me about this project they wanted to do, I thought it sounded really interesting. I have always loved learning about history, and I think it'll be interesting to learn more about where I live.

    I am also really interested. I was born here, and I've lived here my whole life, yet I feel I don't really know anything about this town. Especially more of the topics that are brushed under the rug, such as the tunnels running under prescott

    I am so excited too! Libraries do so much in communities that I'm not aware of or don't know much about, and I'm ready to learn more!
