Wrapping Up Data Collection and Starting Data Analysis

Natania A -

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! This week, I did not put in as much time as usual into my project, as I traveled to Pennsylvania for accepted students day at Penn State! However, I still managed to continue to administer the second language assessment to a few of the residents at Paseo and Fairmont. Since I started working with the Sunshine residents later during my project, I will be wrapping up with them next week, which will conclude the experiment and leave me with the statistical analysis and conclusion of my project.

I have also continued to prepare my presentation and have begun formatting my poster with the general columns, rows, and headings I mentioned in my previous post. I have had experience with preparing posters for case studies, so although my content will be different and will be relaying aggregate data, the overall format of the previous posters will serve as inspiration for the poster I am currently working on.

As stated in the previous post, I will be performing a paired T test to analyze my data, so as preparation for this statistical analysis, I have started grouping my data in a separate excel sheet. In my current excel sheet, the scores on the language test with and without music are mixed and randomized, since some residents had music during their first session and others had music during their second. However, in my new excel sheet, I will organize the scores based on whether they were earned in the presence or absence of music.

Lastly, my on-site mentor gave me a book to read, called “This is your Brain on Music,” by Daniel J. Levitin. I will start reading this in the coming week and will summarize the important information I have read in the next blog post.

Stay tuned for next week as I wrap up my data collection, perform my data analysis, and dive into the deep end of the final products of my project!

Hi Natania! I can't believe you're almost done administering all the tests! Seems like time has flown by! You done such an amazing job throughout this project! Especially with getting consent from all your participants including those with power of attorney! I can't wait to see the results and also to hear about "This is your Brain on Music"! Sounds interesting! - Mrs. Holtzman

Hey Natania - so exciting that you're visiting Penn State and I hope you enjoyed it!! Prior to performing your T test, did you have a specific expectation/hypothesis regarding the strength of correlation between your variables?
