Week 5- Collecting Data

Anagha N -

Hi everyone!

Welcome back to my blog. Now that my survey and content analysis have been finalized, I have begun collecting data. This week I gave out my survey to test pet owners on their knowledge of pet vaccinations. So far, I have 5 responses. There are varying answers because I surveyed clients who vaccinate and don’t vaccinate their pets. One interesting thing that I found was that many pet owners were not very confident using online resources/ pamphlets. This shows that resources for pet owners need to be improved.

I will be going into the clinic on Thursday and Friday this week to continue distributing my survey.

For the content analysis, I finished reviewing the three resources that I mentioned in my last blog post. I used the rubric to score them on different categories and I wrote some notes on the side to explain the scoring. Now that I got the hang of reviewing sources, I plan to do 10 more by the end of this week.

Readability is a very important factor when assessing the accessibility of a source. The way that I assess readability is by copy pasting the contents of the sources onto Microsoft word and using the spelling and grammar check feature to get a Flesch-Kincaid score. This number shows what education level is needed to understand the text. For example, If the score is 6 then the audience needs to be at the 6th grade reading level or higher to understand the writing.

It is recommended that text be at the 8th grade reading level because it improves accessibility and understanding for the audience. In this case, the 9 to 5 Pets blog has a score of 10.3 which is a little high. Doing the content analysis shows me what existing sources are doing right or wrong. This leaves me more informed for when I am making my own resource.

That is all the updates I have this week. See you in my next post.

Hi Anagha, It's so exciting that you already got back some survey responses! Why do you think a lot of pet owners are not very confident using online resources/pamphlets?

Hi Anita, thank you for the question. I got to talk to some pet owners as they were doing the surveys and some of the reasons they mentioned were conflicting information between sources and confusing language. After reviewing some online sources, I think those reasons and a lack of explanation in online sources is why pet owners are not confident in using them.
