Week 4: Interview Questions!

Amita B -

Hi everyone!

I am now shifting some of my focus on my interviews and the specific questions I want to discuss. Here are the key questions I plan to ask:

  1. In your experience, what are the most common ways children express their grief during group sessions?
    • Follow-up Question: Do you notice differences based on age?
  2. How do children in grief groups typically respond to discussions about their loss?
    • Follow-up: Do they openly talk about it, avoid it, or express emotions in other ways? ( Which age groups do what?)
  3. Have you observed any significant differences in how children grieve compared to adults in similar group settings?
    • Follow-up Question: Can you give examples of specific behaviors or emotional expressions that stand out?
  4. What are some nonverbal behaviors you frequently observe in grieving children?
    • Follow-up Question: Do children display physical symptoms such as stomachaches or headaches? Have you noticed behavioral changes like withdrawal or increased aggression?
  5. Do you think children understand the concept of death differently than adults? How does this affect their grieving process?
  6. Is there anything surprising or unexpected you’ve noticed about how children cope with loss in grief groups?

I want to keep my questions to a maximum of six to ensure the conversation feels semi-structured and flows naturally, allowing participants to share their thoughts and experiences freely.

I will be traveling for the month of March, so I plan to schedule and finalize my interviews soon. My goal is to complete them in late March or early April.

Let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions!

Your questions are really well thought out! When you are looking at the data from the answers, how do you plan to organize/sort it to best fit the conclusions you plan to make? (Ex: are you looking for specific words/phrases?)

Hi Amita, great questions! Was there any prior research that inspired some of these questions? Do you have any hypotheses about what answers you will receive?

Hey Amita, I really like how your interview questions explore the different ways children express and process grief—it’s a great way to gather insights! I’m curious, do you plan to compare these grief responses with the coping strategies of adults in the same groups? It could be interesting to see how these age-related differences play out in real-time during group discussions. Looking forward to seeing how your research develops!

I love the progress on your project, Amita! Is there any way you have tried to minimize response bias through these questions, so that the question does not accidentally lead one to an intended answer?

When I look at the data, I plan to organize and sort it by identifying specific themes and ideas that come up in my interviews. I’m also looking for similarities and differences in how grief is expressed across different age groups. Thank you, Mihika!

Yes, I based all of these questions on the research I have done. I have also formulated hypotheses for each question and hope to get some similarities and patterns that I can add to my paper. Thank you!

Thank you, Aashi, for the question! Yes, I will keep the questions open-ended and leave space for them to respond freely, so the answers can go in whatever direction the interviewee takes them!
