Week 3

Sinchana K -

Hello Everyone! Over this week, I have continued with my movie research and watched three more movies from my list. In this blog post, I will be discussing Jab Talk Hai Jaan and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan has two plot lines, set in different periods, one in London in 2002 detailing Major Samar Aanand’s ( The male lead’s) love story with Meera Thapar, and the other being present-day 2012 about an intern, Akira Rai, who is writing a story about the Major and his life. In this movie, the only behavior that was majorly present was cheating, as I recorded six different scenes in which cheating was present and actively occurring.

On the other hand, in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, I recorded four different toxic behaviors, cheating, false expectations, codependency, and controlling behaviors. However, the prevalence of each of these behaviors differed greatly with cheating occurring in three instances, false expectations in five instances, and codependency and controlling behaviors in one instance each. The plot of this movie revolves around Ayan’s search for true love, which remains unfulfilled when Alizeh does not reciprocate his romantic feelings. In his music and life journey after her, he comes across different relationships and people who make him understand the power that unreciprocated love holds.

While the toxic behaviors between these two moves differed greatly, there was one major overarching theme that I noticed. In these movies and other ones I have seen so far, cheating is very hard to recognize because, in Bollywood films, it is disguised as a way of reuniting with the one true love despite whether or not they are in a romantic relationship. I will be discussing this topic and more themes in my upcoming posts. Thank you for reading!

Hey Sinchana, I completely agree with your observation at the end! Cheating often gets romanticized in these films and the characters rarely face backlash. I'm excited to see what other themes you cover.
