Week 2

Hello Everyone!

I began my data collection over the past week and I met with my mentor on Tuesday to discuss my roles in the organization and how to introduce and inform people about the prevalence of toxic behaviors in films and media in general.

As for my data collection, I watched two movies, Dil Dhadakne Do and Rocky Aur Rani Kim Prem Kahaani. Dil Dhadakne Do is not a part of my original movie list as it does not fit the criteria for my movie selection. However, I wanted to watch a movie as a trial run to see if my scales and methods were able to be executed, which is why I chose a movie that was not on my list. Through this trial run, I was able to pick up on some design flaws in my scale and add a ninth behavior to my toxic behavioral scale. One thing I wanted to note is that I am going to be watching the movies out of chronological order to eliminate any bias I may have of finding a trend in the movie behaviors.

Later last week, I watched the first movie on my list, Rocky Aur Rani Kim Prem Kahaani, which was released in 2023. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie with its catchy songs and fairly progressive storyline. The movie was very progressive with its portrayal of gender roles and the main couple of the movie had a healthy relationship. However, the most prevalent toxic behavior was cheating, and this was seen in the elderly couple in the movie.

    Hi Sinchana! Rocky Aur Rani Kim Prem Kahani is a great movie to look for the prevalence of toxic behaviors, especially since it is directed by Karan Johar who has made movies for so long. Could you talk about the scales you are using? What behaviors are on this scale?

    Hey Sowmithra! I will be explaining my scales and specific behaviors more next week. But as an overview, I will be testing nine toxic romantic behaviors on a scale from 0-5 with 0 being that the specific behavior wasn't prevalent at all in the movie and 5 being that the behavior was displayed heavily in the plot, and was seen as romantic. I made these scales independently, however the behaviors I chose were influenced by previously published research papers.

    Hi Sinchana! I'm curious to know what flaws you found in your scale from Dil Dhadakne Do? Did the husband wife relationship between Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah reveal anything? Was the toxicity in their relationship treated differently than the younger couple, Priyanka Chopra and Rahul Bose? It's awesome that you get to watch movies for your research!

    Hi Moksha! I decided to add a controlling behavior to my scale after observing the relationship between Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah as he controls her behaviors in public and sort of shuts her down when she brings up a conversation. For my scales, I am not differentiating between main couples and side couples, so any toxic behaviors I observe among all the character relationships count. From the parents, I picked up on lots of normalized cheating, and from Priyanka Chopra and Rahul Bose, it was more physical altercations and cheating as well from Priyanka Chopra's character.

    Hi Ms. Bennett, I am currently working with nonprofit organizations that work on domestic violence issues to set up interviews and start discussing important issues in the representation of domestic violence in present-day media.
