Week 10 – Final Stages

Allison Y -

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog!

This week I’ve been busy editing my presentation. After my presentation rehearsal this past Monday, I have a few things to tweak. Currently, I’m still putting together my results and analysis part since I was having trouble deciding how to analyze my data. But now, after meeting my mentor yesterday, I have a clearer plan on how to approach that part. I hope to do a quantitative-descriptive analysis and overall compare/contrast the data that I have. In general, my results section in the presentation was a bit too long during rehearsal, so I plan to cut it down to make it more succinct and to the point. As I continue to fix all these parts, I will also continue to practice and refine my talk during my presentation.

For my final product, as I mentioned before, I’ll be writing a research paper. I’m around halfway done with it and have been meeting with Professor Mommaerts to help me edit the paper to make it polished and ready to read. I will finish the rest of my paper by this week, so I can make some more final edits before I submit it next Tuesday.

What was also exciting was that this past weekend, I was able to meet my mentor in-person in Flagstaff! I was part of the All-State orchestra, and the festival was at Northern Arizona University (NAU). I invited Professor Mommaerts to the concert, and she was able to attend. It was a pleasure meeting her in-person and almost like a full circle moment since the project is coming to an end.

Anyways, that’s all for today. Thank you for reading, and see you all next time with more updates!

Hi Allison! It's so cool that you finally got to meet your mentor in-person! What made you decide to write a research paper for your final product?

Hello Tanay! I didn't have many unexpected results as most of the results did support pre-existing research on how music had a positive effect on mental health. However, one thing I noticed was that college students did struggle with mental health, but at different severities. Research online showed a high prevalence of mental health struggles but in my data, it was not as high as the stats out there.

Hello Anagha! I decided to do a quantitative-descriptive analysis since it fit perfectly with the data I had. It was the most practical analysis tool in this case with the time as well. Most of my data was already in pie charts and by doing a correlation/compare-contrast analysis, it was easy to gather and discuss the results.

Hello Akshaya! I decided to do the more traditional route of writing a research paper since I knew it would be the best way to show all my data. I felt that through a paper I could explain more than through a poster or a brochure. Also, my mentor has published many papers and I knew I would be able to gain the best guidance and help if I did a paper.
