Week 1- Pet Vaccinations

Anagha N -

Hi everyone!

Welcome back! Before I dive into the progress I’ve made this week, I want to explain why creating a resource on pet vaccinations is so important.

While there are existing online resources on pet health, they don’t always effectively reach their audience. A study by Niloofar Solhjoo and colleagues found that only 33% of people felt confident using online health information, and just 37% felt confident understanding these sources (Solhjoo, 2019). Attempts have been made to address this issue. Many veterinary practices provide pamphlets to pet owners, but these materials are often difficult to understand. A study by Kenneth Royal and colleagues found that “nine out of ten brochures were above the suggested sixth-grade reading level” (Royal, 2024). As a result, many pet owners still have misconceptions or unanswered questions about pet vaccinations.

Consequently, my goal is to create a website and a pamphlet that avoids the pitfalls of existing resources.

Progress:

This week, I’ve been working on the first step of my project: creating a survey for pet owners. This step is crucial because I need to identify common gaps and misconceptions so I can directly address them in my resource. I plan to distribute the survey to pet owners while they wait for their veterinarian. To gather a diverse dataset, I hope to collect responses from both pet owners who vaccinate and those who don’t. Additionally, I want to ensure the survey is short and easy to understand.

Survey Questions:

Here are some of the key questions I’ve included in my survey:

  1. Do you currently have pet insurance for your pet?

    • Yes
    • No
  2. If you do not have pet insurance, what are the main reasons? (Check all that apply)

    • Cost
    • Uncertainty about coverage
    • Not aware of available plans
    • Other (please specify) _______________
  3. Do you understand the differences between core and non-core vaccines for your pet?

    • Yes
    • No
    • Somewhat
  4. What factors do you believe contribute to the need for vaccination in pets? (Check all that apply)

    • Age
    • Breed
    • Diet
    • Exposure to other animals
    • Previous health conditions
    • Living environment (indoor/outdoor)
    • Other (please specify) _______________
  5. How confident are you in knowing which vaccines your pet needs?

    • Very confident
    • Somewhat confident
    • Not confident
    • Not sure
  6. How confident are you in using online resources or pamphlets to learn about vaccinations?

    • Very confident
    • Somewhat confident
    • Not confident
    • I don’t use online resources
  7. Do you have any concerns about vaccines for pets?

    • Yes
    • No
    • Not sure
  8. If yes, what concerns do you have about vaccines for pets? (Check all that apply)

    • Safety and side effects
    • Vaccine effectiveness
    • Misinformation online
    • Cost
    • Other (please specify) _______________
  9. Is your pet up to date on all their vaccinations?

    • Yes
    • No

Next Steps:

This week, I also visited the vet clinic to finalize my schedule. I’ll be going in about two to three times per week. I’ve been consulting with veterinarians and vet techs for feedback on my survey questions, and I plan to show them my finalized version later this week. Once I receive their feedback and make necessary adjustments, I’ll share the approved version here.

That’s all for now, see you next time!

These are great questions, Anagha! How many questions total do you plan your survey to be?
    anagha_n
I plan on having about 15-20 questions. Thanks for the question Mihika.

Hi Anagha! This is a really cool project. How did you decide which topics to include in your survey? Were there specific misconceptions about pet vaccinations you came across during your research that influenced your questions?

Hey Anagha! Your research question sounds so interesting! Have you considered adding any additional resources or expert opinions in your pamphlet or will the pamphlet consist strictly of the gaps of knowledge and misconceptions you find in your surveys?

Hi Anagha! I love the topic of your project, and your survey questions look great! I was just wondering— for your end goal with the pamphlet/website, do you plan on doing any follow-up to measure the effectiveness of your website and pamphlet once they are created?

Hi Anagha, this is a great start. What resources are already out there to help inform pet owners?

Hi Akshaya! Thank you for your interest in my project and the question. When deciding about the survey topics, I did research online about general misconceptions that pet owners have and I asked the vets at the clinic for misconceptions they have seen when interacting with clients. Some general misconceptions that my research and the vets have told me about is concerning effectiveness and side effects. To assess the prevalence of these misconceptions and others, my survey questions ask about vaccine hesitancy and the pet owner's personal reason for it.

Hi Saren! Thank you for your interest in my project and the question. To create the pamphlet, I will be breaking down expert opinions and guidelines in a simple and straightforwards way to address misconceptions. However, the pamphlet will not just address gaps and misconceptions from the survey. I also plan to add information about places that pet owners can reach out to for assistance and guidelines or next steps that owners can take when they decide to vaccinate their pet.

Hi Amita! Thank you for your interest in my project and the question. As of right now, I do plan to track the effectiveness of the website by checking the website traffic. For the pamphlet, I plan to put a set number of pamphlets out and count the number of times I have to restock that amount.

Hi Mrs. Bennett! Thank you for your interest in my project and the question. There are already research based resources from universities, organizations, and clinics and informal resources like blogs. However, the research based resources have a lot of medical jargon and long explanations and blogs have casual language but lack a lot of explanation. So, while there are a variety of resources the information doesn't always reach pet owners due to the way the information is presented and communicated.
