Week 1

Sinchana K -

Hello Everyone! In this week’s blog post, I am going to explain how I will be conducting my research and how I specifically chose the movies in my study.

The following movies were chosen by looking at the highest grossing box office hits on the Box Office of India website. The movies were filtered by genre (Hindi Romantic-Comedy movies) and total revenue (highest grossing movie of that annual year). There will be a total of 15 movies from 1994-2023, and there is a gap of two years between every movie. I chose to start in 1994 as it is almost exactly 30 years ago to study the movie trends over the last three decades, and a gap of two years between each movie to have sufficient time between the release of the movies.

However, one major outlier is a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a halt in the Hindi film industry. As a result, there are very minimal movies recorded from 2020-2022, with some years having none. I decided to add a movie from 2019 due to the absence of a movie in 2020. Additionally, the absence of a movie in 2022 was replaced by one in 2023. While the years of the movie release differed, the criteria for the movie selection remained the same.

The movies are: 1994: Yeh Dillagi, 1996: Raj Hindustani, 1998: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, 2000: Mohabattein, 2002: Devdas, 2004: Veer Zaara, 2006: Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, 2008: Rab ne bana de Jodi, 2010: I Hate Luv Storys, 2012: Jab Tak Hai Jaan, 2014: 2 states, 2016: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, 2018: Zero, 2019: Kabir Singh, 2023: Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani

I hope this provides a better understanding of my research project and my methodology. Thank you!
