Ways to improve SDOH

Saahithi I -

Hi everyone! Welcome back to this week’s blog! In the past week I have finished up with the research portion of my project. I have also made big progress on writing my paper which is a systematic review on all of the articles and books I have so far. In this week’s blog, I will be talking about the ways to improve social determinants that I have come up with through examining the gaps in the literature.

Financial security: Implementing or expanding income support programs such as guaranteed minimum income, earned income tax credits, and cash transfer programs can help alleviate poverty and improve financial stability for individuals and families. Providing education and resources on financial management, budgeting, saving, and debt management can empower individuals to make informed financial decisions and build long-term financial security.

Discrimination: Providing cultural competency training for healthcare providers, educators, law enforcement personnel, and other professionals can help ensure that they understand and respect the diverse backgrounds and needs of the populations they serve. Housing security: Expanding access to housing assistance programs, such as rental assistance, homebuyer assistance, and housing counseling services, can help low-income Native American families afford safe and stable housing. Investing in infrastructure development, including water and sanitation systems, roads, and utilities, can improve the quality of housing and living conditions in Native American communities. Strengthening tribal housing programs and initiatives, including the Indian Housing Block Grant program and the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA), can empower tribes to develop and manage their own housing solutions.

Food security: Expanding access to healthy and affordable foods in Native American communities, particularly in remote and rural areas, through initiatives such as farmers’ markets, community gardens, and mobile food pantries. Investing in strategies to address food deserts and food insecurity in Native American communities, such as improving transportation infrastructure, supporting grocery store development, and expanding food assistance programs.
