Shift in Method – Manual Search
Mihika G -
The past few weeks, I’ve been feeling my way around Google Colab to see if it is compatible with my project’s goals; although it seems feasible, I would still need to develop a solid code, which I could then put into the software. For this reason, with the guidance of my faculty advisor, Dr. Goodwin, I am switching the methodology I plan to use to sift through posts.
Rather than examining all articles published surrounding the topic, I will instead identify the top viewed pieces during the timeframe between her candidacy announcement and her concession, and create a rubric for myself to annotate these for the terms I mentioned in my last post. To address the issue of bias I had discussed previously, I feel that if I split up this work across multiple work days/weeks, this would reduce any omissions or errors in reading.
The next step is defining the actual parameters, and potentially reframing my research question. I can stick with what I had originally planned, using CNN and Fox News (and potentially the New York Times) due to their positions as the highest-traffic English language news sites. Conversely, due to my new method, I can choose to focus in on one site, refocusing my research onto gender marking seen in one specific source, rather than media in general.
