Shift in Method – Manual Search

Mihika G - March 5, 2025 11:46 am

The past few weeks, I’ve been feeling my way around Google Colab to see if it is compatible with my project’s goals; although it seems feasible, I would still need to develop a solid code, which I could then put into the software. For this reason, with the guidance of my faculty advisor, Dr. Goodwin, I am switching the methodology I plan to use to sift through posts.

Rather than examining all articles published surrounding the topic, I will instead identify the top viewed pieces during the timeframe between her candidacy announcement and her concession, and create a rubric for myself to annotate these for the terms I mentioned in my last post. To address the issue of bias I had discussed previously, I feel that if I split up this work across multiple work days/weeks, this would reduce any omissions or errors in reading.

The next step is defining the actual parameters, and potentially reframing my research question. I can stick with what I had originally planned, using CNN and Fox News (and potentially the New York Times) due to their positions as the highest-traffic English language news sites. Conversely, due to my new method, I can choose to focus in on one site, refocusing my research onto gender marking seen in one specific source, rather than media in general.

Hi Mihika! I am excited to see the results of your content analysis. What are the benefits of focusing your research on one specific source instead of media in general?

Hi Mihika, I think it's smart to limit your scope given the limited time frame of this project. I am still interested in hearing how your site placement is informing your project?

Great question Anagha! I think that focusing on one source would allow my research to get more specific in terms of behaviors and trends seen in said media source; this means my final conclusions and analysis could be applied to concrete action items. Attempting to research media in general would mean analyzing less content from each news outlet, so the results may not be as representative.

Ms. Bennett - I just replied to your last comment regarding my site placement. Adding onto my last reply, I am working with LWVMP's media coordinator as I analyze the articles for gender bias. I aim to optimize on her experience with media relations and analysis to identify sources of bias and weighted language beyond the obvious gender labelling in the articles. For example, the amount of times personal or family matters are discussed for one candidate over another, versus policy positions.
