Refining the Methodology

Mihika G -

To add onto my last post, I want to start brainstorming key words and/or phrases that I can flag in the literature.

Gender Marking Terms:

  • female
  • lady
  • woman
  • girl
  • madam/ma’am
  • mother
  • wife

Adjectives:

Positive:

  • strong
  • powerful
  • confident
  • decisive
  • bold
  • commanding
  • authoritative
  • experienced
  • tough
  • leader

Negative:

  • emotional
  • moody
  • hysterical
  • shrill
  • nagging
  • inexperienced
  • new
  • bossy
  • aggressive
  • cold
  • unlikable
  • overly ambitious
  • calculated
  • weak
  • timid

Competency Framing

  • Questions when discussing candidate as opposed to statements –> flag for any question marks in the absence of a direct, non-rhetorical question

Feminization of Men, as a Weakness

  • Not man enough (being a man)
  • little girl
  • wearing the pants

I am presently unsure on whether I should limit my search to a few key, specific words, or if I should expand the scope by including more terms.

Hi Mihika, this is interesting work. How is your site placement informing your research?

Thanks Ms. Bennett! Presently, I'm spending time with LWVMP's media coordinator, who has some experience analyzing the media, and how that affects voting patterns, such as registration and frequency of polling. She is guiding my research in terms of helping me identify what I'm scanning the articles for, and what specific language I want to highlight and include in my final data set.
