Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog!

My name is Tejasvi Sanikommu, and this blog will be reflecting on my Senior Research Project. My research project is about e-waste and consumer behavior. E-waste is electronic waste, aka end-of-life waste. This essentially includes any device that can be plugged in, has batteries, or has any type of wirings. This might seem surprising, but it includes anything and everything from a hair dryer and your phone to a washing machine and a refrigerator.  In the current day, e-waste in one of the most rapidly-growing types of waste. It is also one of the most toxic to the environment and human health.

In recent years, there have been many new companies from around the world that have came to invest in Arizona. Some examples include LG Energy Solution, a South Korean Battery company is coming to the Phoenix area to build a factory manufacturing cylindrical-type batteries that are ideal for electric vehicles, and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, who is coming to northern Phoenix to build a massive chip plant.  Amongst this rise in factories in the Phoenix metropolitan area, it is important to be knowledgeable about the effects of e-waste.

Hence, I will be surveying students at Arizona State University and Maricopa Community Colleges (the 2 most attended colleges in the Phoenix metropolitan area) regarding the e-waste recycling behaviors, knowledge, and opinions. The purpose of this research is to understand why or why not people participate in e-waste management and to analyze other factors that play a role in this decision.

For this project, I will be working with Dr. Jennifer Foltz-Sweat, a part of the biology faculty at the Maricopa Community Colleges. She will be guiding me through the data analysis part of this project.

For my site placement, I will be interning at Global Electronic Recycling, a formal e-waste recycling sector, where I will learn more about the processes of e-waste recycling and how large scale recycling from businesses takes place.

I hope you find this project interesting, and stay tuned for more updates!

Hi Teju! This project is super important today, and it's great that you're looking into better alternatives to e-waste pollution. Do you know of any businesses that Global Electronic Recycling has partnered with to recycle e-waste?

Hey Priya! Great question! Currently, I do not know of any businesses that partnered with Global Electronics Recycling, but I hope to learn more about their Corporate Electronic Recycling program as I begin interning there next week!
