Conclusion to Exploring The Genomic Effects Of PNPLA7 Mutations On Cerebral Palsy Through RNA Sequencing

Arnab M -

Hi guys, my name is Arnab Misra and welcome to my final blog post about my senior research project: Exploring the Genomic Effects of PNPLA7 Mutations on Cerebral Palsy through RNA Sequencing. Today I will not be discussing the technical details of my project, rather the implications and bigger picture of Cerebral Palsy Research and how my experience at the lab fits into the idea of battling CP through biomedical research.

I started at the Kruer Lab in the summer of 2023, but I could not have predicted how monumentally life-changing this experience was to me. I always knew I was going to be conducting data analysis with Bioinformatics coding, however, the PI of the lab, Dr. Kruer, though it would be a good idea to expose me to every single part of the research process, which meant going in clinic and shadowing him in-person and getting to see the kids’ lives I would be changing with my research. It was also a pleasant surprise when Dr. Kruer introduced me to some of his Wet-lab researchers, and even allowed to be shadow and participate in some of their other ongoing experiments. It truly was incredible to have these experiences on top of the amazing research I did with my onsite mentors. On top of the clinical and technical shadowing that the lab granted me, I was also a part of their general Lab Meetings that occurred every other Thursday. These meetings also instilled massive amounts of knowledge about various non science-related topics: Project Management. I learned how crucial project management is to successfully and efficiently running a lab, even though many researchers don’t even receive these kinds of training. It was absolutely incredible to see a team so dedicated to their work that they were findings ways and creative outlets to improve each other in any way possible. It was truly inspiring and I hope any lab I get to work at in Boston can live up to the reputation, expertise, and generosity of the Kruer Lab.

As for the impact of my research, Dr. Kruer has handed over to me the responsibility of continuing and reaching out to other research professionals to finish a paper on PNPLA7, obviously as an ambitious high schooler, there are many limitations that must be overcome, but I am willing to put in the time, effort, and knowledge to work to achieve this noble goal. I will be going to the Kruer Lab over the summer to see just how far I can take this project, but our results again are promising enough. I would like to thank everyone along this journey for supporting me and keeping up with this blog. I had so much fun and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. See you on May 9th for my presentation!
