Week 5: Data Collection + Methodology Adjustment
Avni C -
It’s Week 5 and we’re about halfway through!
Similarly, I’m halfway through my data collection. 2024 is nearly completely done, so it’s about time to start thinking about how to get all of the 2014 magazines. Sometime in this next week, I’m planning to head over to my local library to check out their database. Looking online, I can’t seem to find any of the magazines on the library’s public database, so I’m hoping they have some sort of physical copy or the magazine is stored on the library’s computer. If I truly can’t find it, then I can still buy the issues; they’re about 5 dollars each, so 20 dollars total for my purposes.
I’ve realized as I code, organizing my data, that I need to be very clear about exactly what I’m doing in my methodology. Previously, I was only planning on organizing based on exercises mentioned. If an exercise was advertised, then I could code for various details surrounding it. However, I’ve modified my methodology to include simple mentions of these details; no exercise is necessary for me to organize it. For instance, now, if the magazine has, say, an interview of someone saying that they want to get abs, I’ll code for body part: abdominals, even if there’s no exercise. Details like this are important, so I’ll go back and revise my methodology.
I’m still worried about data analysis, and I want to make sure that everything I’m doing has some sort of justification and reference behind it. As such, I’m also planning to put more time into looking at similar projects, and seeing how they analyzed their data. If I could find a reference for my own analysis, that would be ideal.
So far, so good,
See you all next week!
