We’re Going Back in Time to the First Performances to Get Theater on the Menu.

Danielle l -

Audience members, hold onto your foldable theater seats. I’ve started to lay the base ideas for my musical!

There was difficulty deciding a theme. Aliens? Pirates? Animals? There were too many childhood niches to choose from.

I then played with the category of “Historical Figures.” I was thinking in the realm of Mr. Peabody and Sherman or The Magic Tree House: kids travelling to different parts of history. Then I thought, “Hey, why not do this but specifically for time periods of theater?”  Thus, my general theme was born. This also explains this post’s title which some may recognize as a rephrasing of a ridiculous line from the animated film Free Birds.

As for characters: the general idea is that there is one student that has to time-travel to learn the importance of theater with their two friends tagging along. Each theater era will have 5 featured roles, and these roles will be characters from a production during that period/category (e.g. Romeo for Shakespeare).

Some songs have been decided too! I mean, “Empire State of Mind” for the Broadway section is a given.

As for my internship, I started getting insight to EVCT’s spring break camp! Funny enough, this camp is about making a kids’ jukebox for the campers to help write and perform by the end. Since the theme is spooky, my task was to find cuts of musical songs that could be used for the numbers. I was happy to revisit The Addams Family, a musical I performed in last summer, as well as a favorite childhood series: Descendants (“Chillin’ Like a Villain” still remains amazing).

My mentor invited me to see a school’s first ever production last Thursday! It was Finding Nemo Kids, and this accomplished with the help of Disney Musicals in Schools. This program helps elementary schools jumpstart theater programs and specifically aims to teach the school’s faculty successful directing. It sort of aligns with my goals of how to introduce theater as a friend to kids’ lives. The production was adorable and magical: every inch of the stage walls was covered in blue wallpaper, with bubbles and kelp hanging from the ceiling. It was truly a wonderful first show!

Take 7 till next post.

The playbill from Finding Nemo Kids (my phone unfortunately died before I could get pictures of the set).

Hi, Danielle! Do you have a photo you meant to attach? Also just to clarify--the spring break theme is Spooky? Love to hear more! MG

Hi Danielle, it's wonderful to see you have a theme for your musical! I know it might be tough to gauge at this stage, but do you have an idea of how long you want your musical to be? I'm excited to see how your story evolves.

Danielle, I love the reference to Free Birds in the title. I was wondering about the general plot of your production. Will there be a central antagonist that drives the plot forward or will this just be an exploration of the different periods for knowledge’s sake?

Hey, Giles! There should be a photo of the playbill from Finding Nemo Kids above the caption. Also, yes, the theme of the spring break camp is spooky, so the jukebox musical for it will be created with songs from spooky musicals. Other than The Addams Family and Descendants, other musicals that are being considered include Beetlejuice, Little Shop of Horrors, and of course the currently popular Wicked!

Hi, Cason! Thanks for the support! My musical will hopefully be around 30-45 minutes which is the length of the average kids' musical. It may be a challenge to condense it to be that long, but that's part of the fun!

What's up, Jacob? Thanks for loving the reference; glad to find a fellow Free Birds enjoyer. As for the plot, I don't plan for there to be an antagonist character, but I'm considering including some sort of problem near the end of the story that the three students need to resolve. Right now, I'm tinkering with the idea that all the periods/categories merge due to a rip in the continuum. We'll see where it goes!

Hey Danielle, I really like the opening sentence to this post. I have always had a weird fascination with foldable theater seats, but that story is for another day. The general theme you've found is really interesting as well! Do you know if you'll put focus on the student and their friends' understanding of theatre or the general importance of each time period in the world of theatre?

Hey Danielle! I love your theme for your musical! I didn't even know there were different theater eras. How many eras are you planning on having in your musical and do you know roughly how many kids will be in it?

Hello Danielle! Your theme for your musical is absolutely amazing. I love the way you are incorporation the history of theater into your work. Are you thinking of adding a central moral to learn from your story?

Good morning, Nick! Nice to see someone else who loves those seats; we will have to talk some time. I'm aiming more towards the first as the overall message of the show, but there will be fun facts about each period/category of theater that will be sprinkled into each scene!

Allison! Thanks for the positive feedback! For now, I am planning to have 5 eras in my show, and these will be finalized by this week. I may cut it down to 4 if needed, but I hope to keep all 5. Overall, the cast size of the show so far comes out to be 28 actors with what I have mentioned so far, and it could come to 30 with 2 additional characters that I have in mind.

Howdy, Kathy! Thanks for loving the theme so far! Similar to my answer to Nick's question, I aim for the central moral to be understanding the relevance and benefits of theater in a kids' daily life. I originally didn't think the message would be this direct, but I feel it's for the best to really achieve my goal with this play. I'll have to play around with how exactly to deliver this message in the script!
